New York State has a temporary burn ban in effect due to increased fire risk, which Governor Hochul implemented on October 1st, 2025, and will remain in effect until at least October 15, 2025. This ban prohibits outdoor fires, but does allow exception for campfires, small cooking fires, or ceremonial bonfires that do not exceed a certain size and are only fueled by charcoal or dry, clean wood.

🔥 Burn Ban Advisory - Please Review 🔥

🔥 Open Burning Reminder 🔥

Sheriff Jeffery T. Smith would like to remind everyone that although the NYS spring burn ban has ended, safe burning practices are still everyone’s responsibility.

If you plan to burn, please follow NYS DEC’s open burning regulations to help prevent wildfires. You can review the rules at https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/32060.html

If you do burn:
✅ Have tools or water ready to control the fire.
✅ Call 911 immediately if it gets out of control.
✅ Notify our Dispatch Center first at 518-853-5500 with your location to avoid unnecessary fire department responses.
