Georgetown Lake - DANGEROUS ICE CONDITIONS 12/20/2025

Unusual weather this year and the recent wind events have created dangerous ice conditions at Georgetown Lake.

The wind fractured and shifted the already weak ice pack causing large cracks and holes
throughout the lake as well as large areas of open water especially on the south and west sides of the lake. It is likely that these open areas will soon fill in with a thin sheet of ice hidden under snow creating a very dangerous situation.

STAY OFF THE ICE until conditions improve which will probably take a few weeks. Attempting to cross from the east or north side of the lake where the ice is thicker
to the south or west sides which are currently open water is likely to be extremely hazardous.

Silver Lake is currently free of ice, so any
ice that forms there is also going to be hazardous for some time.

If you choose to go on the ice, please WEAR A LIFE VEST and take precautions for self-rescue.

Tightly control your children and dogs so that they don't end up on the ice. If your dog falls through the ice do not attempt to rescue it on
your own. STAY OFF THE ICE and call 911.

Please help us share this information on social media. If you are providing a short-term rental, please make sure your renters get this
message. Conditions this year are very abnormal, and visitors especially may be surprised by the conditions.

Volunteers needed. The GTLVFD is searching for the next generation of Volunteers to contribute and continue the great tradition of Volunteer Fire Fighters and EMS responders. The state of the VFD nationally is reaching a critical time. Attracting new members has been a struggle every where. Here at the Lake we have been fortunate having established a core leadership group and a few new members each year.. However we are getting a little long in the tooth so to speak

If you live at the lake, or surrounding area, or have a second home we would like to invite you to be a part of the team. It is worthwhile to spend a couple evening a month learning how to safely provide support in emergency, gain first aid and emergency medical skills and having a good laugh.

We understand that everyone is busy and we are flexible with our schedules. There are tasks that can be done that do not include putting on fire gear and going into a burning building. Please consider joining this group and giving back to your community. DM Bob if you have questions.

The Department provides all equipment, training, Workers Comp protection and PERS membership active Volunteers.

The GTLFVFD would like to express our sincere appreciation to Rex and Annie Young, two long-time volunteers and leaders in our outstanding organization. They are moving on to a new adventure away from Georgetown Lake. They have both given hundreds of hours to this community, and they will be missed. I could make a list of all of the things their efforts have impacted, but I am sure I would miss about half of them.

From the perspective of the Fire Department, the community is losing two fine EMT's, and an outstanding CPR/ACLS instructor in Annie. Rex has trained as an apparatus operator, EMT, and a fire fighter. Rex was a member of our FSA board along with other community members. They will be missed.

Please join us in wishing them a fond farewell and hope that all your trails are clear, lines are tight, and the snow is perfect as you move on to the next chapter.

Sorry Annie, I did not have a picture of you doing the things we do..

If you are reading this and would like to become a volunteer, we would love to talk to you. Send me a message. Bob

Thank you to our residents and homeowners. Because of your ongoing support, your firefighters were able to replace our 20+ year old safety clothing. We now have safety clothing that will provide a layer of protection during rescue operations and structure fires.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our organization, please reach out through this site. We have a real need for new members. There are a lot of opportunities to help this growing community. We need help in areas other than the actual emergency response. They include grant writing, record keeping, plan review, and vehicle maintenance. Please feel free to drop me a line.

We can never be to prepared in case of wild fire. The weather has turned hot, dry, and windy. Make sure your family is prepared if we have a start in our local watershed.
