Things move fast in this line of work. Even faster when you’re a dispatcher. When Elias took a call about a woman in labor, he had help on the way in seconds. Then the baby arrived and wasn’t crying right away. Elias didn’t miss a beat. He walked the family through exactly what to do, and stayed on the line until paramedics arrived. Today Chief Portillo recognized Elias for that call, and honestly, it couldn’t be more deserved. A steady voice on the other end of the line made all the difference for this family. That’s what our dispatchers do every single day.

Matt didn’t just take a call, he helped deliver a baby from a headset. A family was on their way to the hospital when it became clear the baby wasn’t going to wait. Matt realized they were close to one of our fire stations and had them pull over nearby so fire could get to them fast. While fire was en route, Matt stayed on the line and calmly talked the parents through delivering their own baby. By the time the baby’s head had crowned, fire arrived and finished the delivery right there in the parking lot. Today, Chief Portillo presented Matt with recognition for his role in helping deliver that baby. Matt’s ability to give clear instructions and attention to detail made all the difference for this family. Great work, Matt!

When a 9-1-1 call came in for an unplanned home birth, Erika answered. She walked the parents through exactly what to do, so they could safely deliver their baby before help even got there.

When a 9-1-1 call came in for an unplanned birth at home, Josh got help dispatched right away. With an ambulance still en route, there wasn’t time to wait, so he stayed on the line and walked the caller through the delivery himself.

He gave clear and direct instructions exactly when they were needed most. By the time help arrived on scene, a baby girl had already been born.

This is the kind of work that doesn’t always make headlines, but it changes everything for the people on the other end of that call. We are so proud of you, Josh!
