SUMMER SAFETY TIP – CHOOSING SWIMWEAR

With summer here and more families spending time at pools, lakes, and beaches, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office wants to share an important water safety reminder.

The color of a child’s swimsuit can make a difference when it comes to visibility in the water. Colors like white, light blue, and gray can be harder to see underwater, especially in lakes or darker water conditions.

Bright colors such as neon pink, orange, yellow, and bright green are usually much easier to spot and can help swimmers stand out more clearly.

No swimsuit color replaces close supervision, but choosing brighter colors is one small step that can help improve safety while enjoying time in the water this summer.

MOMENT AT THE MEMORIAL

Today, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office gathered at the Chambers County Courthouse for the annual Moment at the Memorial ceremony honoring peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

During the ceremony, CCSO’s Honor Guard presented the colors as law enforcement officers, county officials, and community members came together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving others.

We especially remember our fallen Chambers County officers:

Sheriff John Lighter Frost – End of Watch: November 10, 1900

Deputy Constable Levi E. Oliver – End of Watch: March 5, 1930

Deputy Sheriff Dirk Ray Knearem – End of Watch: October 17, 2004

Deputy Sheriff Shane Thomas Detwiler – End of Watch: July 13, 2009

Their dedication, courage, and sacrifice continue to be remembered throughout Chambers County. We remain thankful for their service and honor their memory today and every day.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2026

From May 11 through May 17, 2026, we join agencies across the country in recognizing National Police Week. This week is a time to show appreciation for the men and women in law enforcement who serve their communities every day, while also remembering the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
A career in law enforcement comes with long hours, sacrifice, and challenges that many people never see. Every day, officers put on the badge knowing the responsibility and risks that come with the job, all to help keep their communities safe.

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank all law enforcement personnel, including deputies, dispatchers, jailers, and support staff, for the work they do each day. We also remember the officers who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families who continue to honor their memory.

CCSO INVESTIGATORS TRACK DOWN OFF-ROAD VEHICLE THEFT SUSPECTS

On January 25, 2026, Chambers County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an alarm call at Gene’s Polaris, located in the 12000 block of Interstate Highway 10 in Baytown. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that three off-road vehicles, valued at more than $70,000 combined, had been stolen from the business.

Over the following months, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division conducted an extensive investigation into the theft. CID investigators conducted surveillance operations, gathered and analyzed evidence, and interviewed multiple suspects and acquaintances connected to the case.

Investigators secured arrest warrants for Estevan Cruz of Baytown and Daniel Stanley Aguirre Urbina of Houston on felony theft charges. On Monday, May 4, 2026, while conducting additional surveillance, deputies located both suspects and took them into custody without incident.

Cruz and Urbina were booked into the Chambers County Jail. Investigators also determined that Urbina is an illegal alien unlawfully present in the United States.

“This case is a good example of what can happen when deputies stay proactive and keep working a case long after the initial call,” Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said. “I’m proud of the time and effort that went into this investigation over the last several months. I also want to thank the business owners in our community who continue to support law enforcement and trust us to help protect their businesses and livelihoods.”

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

CCSO MARINE UNIT PROVIDES SECURITY DURING RESCUE DIVER DEMONSTRATION

This past week, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit assisted the U.S. Coast Guard during a rescue diver demonstration conducted by helicopter in Kemah. Deputies maintained a safety perimeter around the training area, ensuring no vessels entered the zone while the operation was underway.

This type of training plays an important role in preparing for real-world emergencies, and we are grateful for the opportunity to assist the U.S. Coast Guard and see this training up close.

CCSO NOW HIRING – SOCIAL MEDIA COORDINATOR (PART-TIME)

We are still accepting applications for our Part-Time Social Media Coordinator position (32 hours per week).

This role is responsible for managing the Sheriff’s Office social media platforms, creating content, assisting with community events, and helping share important information with the public. Duties include photography, video, writing posts, monitoring pages, and assisting with public information during major incidents and outreach events.

Applicants should have strong communication skills, experience with social media platforms, and the ability to work some evenings and weekends for events and Office functions.

NATIONAL CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS WEEK

The first full week of May is recognized as National Correctional Officers Week, a time to acknowledge the men and women who work behind the scenes in our jail facilities.

Correctional officers play a critical role in maintaining safety and order while managing the daily operations of the jail. It is a demanding job that requires patience, professionalism, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne shared, “One of the most challenging daily tasks we face as a Sheriff’s Office is managing the day-to-day operations of a jail. I would like to say thank you to a group that is all too often forgotten in law enforcement, our corrections officers.”

We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our correctional officers and thank them for what they do every day to help keep our community safe.

CITIZENS ACADEMY – WEEK #5

Week five of our Citizens Academy gave participants a closer look at how CCSO operates on the water and in the air.

Lt. Croyle, Sgt. Burt, and Sgt. Orlando walked the group through the responsibilities of our Marine Unit, including search and rescue operations and boating safety enforcement. Participants also had the opportunity to tour the Marine Facility and learn more about how our deputies serve on the water.

The group then heard from Deputy Currie, who introduced CCSO’s drone program and demonstrated how the technology is used to assist in real-time situations in the field.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT 🚨

Emergency personnel are responding to a major accident on I-10 at the westbound 813 mile marker near SH 61.

All westbound lanes are currently shut down at this time while first responders work the scene. Traffic is being diverted to FM 1724.

TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT INITIATIVE – COUNTYWIDE

The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a Traffic Enforcement Initiative from May 1st through August 3, 2026, aimed at improving roadway safety and reducing traffic hazards across the county. During this time, deputies will be paying close attention to the use of off-highway vehicles, including side-by-sides, four-wheelers, dirt bikes not designed for roadway use, and golf carts.

While Texas law does allow limited roadway use for certain off-highway vehicles, those situations are specific and subject to applicable equipment and roadway requirements. For example, ATVs are permitted for use within the Plantation subdivision, but operators must follow all traffic laws and ensure the vehicle meets equipment requirements. Riders must also use proper personal safety equipment when operating these vehicles.

Deputies will be out proactively during this initiative, with the goal of reducing accidents and keeping our roadways safe. We encourage residents to stay informed on the laws and help us keep the community safe.
