Happy to the Community Health Program! Makayla Emmons runs this program, improving our County’s health and wellbeing by educating, encouraging, and empowering residents to make healthy, sustainable choices. This program provides health education based on the needs of the community, collaborates with local providers, and coordinates community events, such as Reality Check and the Chambers County Back to School Bash. This week, members of our team travelled to the our beautiful capitol, Austin, for the annual TACCHO conference. While there, our Community Health Nurse, Makayla Emmons, presented on the Reality Check program, and Chambers County Public Health was awarded the 2026 Education Through Innovation Award for our work in developing and implementing Reality Check into our community.

By attending this conference, our team is able to collaborate with public health officials across the state, workshop real solutions to public health concerns, and build lasting partnerships to support the resilience of our County. Sharing our work at TACCHO was a wonderful way to celebrate !

None of our work for the community would be possible without our strong and supportive Administrative Team! Happy to the team that coordinates and manages our finances and grants, internal administrative needs, the development and updating of public health plans, HIPAA compliance, and staff trainings.

Our Communicable Disease program, guided by the Texas Health and Safety Code, provides the framework for all of our public health work. Lead by Lena Turner and supported by Madison Cooper, this team performs public health data management, disease surveillance and investigation of all notifiable conditions as determined by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), and educates local providers, including schools, laboratories, and hospitals, on mandatory reporting compliance. Happy to this dynamic duo!

Today, as part of National Public Health Week, we would like to recognize Clinical Health Services. Lead by Shelby Comte and supported by Haegan Bean, this program provides vaccines to children who qualify for TVFC or adults who qualify for ASN, manages the treatment of patients with tuberculosis, tests for and treats STDs, offers free pregnancy testing, and provides flu vaccines to all residents. If you would like to know more about these services or would like to schedule an appointment, you can call 409-267-2730

Today marks the start of National Public Health Week. We would like to recognize the leaders in public health who put the safety and well-being of their community before all else. Our Director of Health Services, Mary Beth Bess, has dedicated her life to protecting the health of Chambers County residents - pursuing a variety of initiatives, education, and professional connections to ensure the continued protection of residents.

Today, we were given the opportunity to share our Reality Check program with Anahuac High School seniors. Since we piloted this program 4 years ago, it has grown, expanded, and is now being adopted by partners in neighboring counties.

Reality Check is an interactive, realistic crash-course in financial literacy and budgeting for high school seniors. Students are provided with a randomized career, family, and associated income before navigating over 20 booths to create a monthly budget. Our goal is to provide students with the necessary tools and perspective to make wise financial decisions as young adults.

We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of our community partners, volunteers, staff, and Anahuac ISD for making this program possible and for sharing their valuable knowledge with students. Our community certainly knows how to show up and support each other when it matters! We look forward to bringing this program to East Chambers High School students next month!
