"While no bill is perfect, HB 57 reflects compromise and consensus. It balances local needs, state policy goals, and a shared belief in the value of public education. The Legislature has shown character and courage in forging this agreement — qualities that are too often missing in public life today."

Lawmakers put students over politics. So should the governor.

Yesterday, lawmakers failed to override Dunleavy's veto of HB 69. As a result, disastrous budgetary necessities like increasing class sizes, cutting sports/music programs, and pink-slipping dedicated teachers became closer to reality.

We thank those who have worked hard fighting for a BSA increase and voted to override. To those who voted no, there is still time to come back to the table and deliver the education funding our schools need. Future generations of Alaskans are counting on it.

BREAKING: The Alaska House just voted to pass HB 69, a bill that would increase the BSA by $1,000. This is one step closer to providing the educators with the funding they need to provide the quality education Alaskans deserve!
