.outreach Hospitalman Erika Castillo, from Las Vegas, Nevada, serves in the U.S. Navy at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command in San Diego, California.
“I joined the Navy to get a head start in my dream career as a paramedic,” said Castillo. “I’ve always wanted to join the military to get the most learning experience as soon as I could and essentially ‘jump into the deep end’ to learn how to sink or swim. To me, that was the best way to learn how to finally be independent and to be a part of something meaningful. I specifically chose the Navy because it was always my father’s dream to enlist; it became our dream instead.”
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Las Vegas.
“My parents would never cease to give up the opportunity to teach our family how important it was to have a dream and pursue it, to have a plan, to always aim for success in your goal, and to never settle for less,” said Castillo.
