Happy Thanksgiving from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Alaska Region!

Today we’re grateful for the lands, waters, wildlife, and people that make Alaska extraordinary.

Thank you to our partners, volunteers, Tribal communities, and all who help care for the places we all depend on.

Wishing you a safe and peaceful holiday—may it be filled with good food, good company, and a little time outdoors.

Big thanks to our partners at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game - Official who spearheaded recent improvements at Jim’s Landing Boat Launch on the Upper Kenai River. The refreshed site now includes upgraded launch lanes, a sturdier staging area, paved access, expanded parking, new vault latrines, streambank restoration, benches, and an updated information kiosk.

Want to see more? Check the comments for a link to ADF&G’s YouTube channel, where you can find a great video about the Jim’s Landing upgrades.

Who’s ready for winter?

Who’s ready for winter?

How to handle the changing seasons? Option 4: skedaddle!
✈️✈️
If the Arctic winter is not for you - or if, like a qugruk (tundra swan), frozen waterways lock away your food supply - the best plan might be to relocate. Tundra swans that nest in the Selawik Refuge migrate down toward the Great Salt Lake, then over toward California, before coming back to the same general area for the next nesting season.

We’re in the middle of Global Bird Rescue 2025 (Sept 22–28)! Across the world, people are documenting and reporting bird-building collisions to raise awareness of this leading cause of bird deaths. Anyone can join in — every report helps protect birds.

Check out the comments for more information on birds collisions with buildings & glass and how you can help prevent them.

Biotechs on Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge bringing out their best outfits for !

In honor of , we’d like to bring some friendly competition to the Park Service. The packing list for Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge biotechs on the Aleutian Islands typically consist of a lot of rain gear - the rain doesn't stop us from bringing out our very best outfits. Amazing vibes, though the umbrella is a bit useless against the heavy Aleutian rain and harsh wind. The only reason to bring an umbrella to Aiktak must be to fend from the seabirds from attacking your head (we don't want to be basic).☔
