“As human beings, we’re not meant to be alone and isolated. It’s not healthy for us. So just having the camaraderie is enough for someone to say, you know what, it’s worth it. I do feel better.”

June is National PTSD Awareness Month. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, including military combat, accidents, natural disasters, or personal violence. Symptoms can include flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, emotional numbness, and heightened startle responses.

PTSD affects Trust beneficiaries across Alaska. The Trust funds trauma-informed care programs and evidence-based treatments that help individuals experiencing PTSD access the services they need.

Did you know that Alaska’s land plays a direct role in supporting mental health and disability services? The Trust Land Office (TLO) manages approximately one million acres of Trust land with a clear purpose: to generate the revenue that supports the Trust’s mission.

Through responsible land management including land sales, resource development, and commercial leasing, the TLO creates a steady stream of income used to fund essential programs across the state. This revenue directly supports the Trust’s grantmaking efforts, which provide critical services like behavioral health crisis response, community-based housing, and support for Alaskans with developmental disabilities.

By maximizing the value of these natural assets, we help ensure that the Trust has a stable foundation to improve the lives of Trust beneficiaries today and for generations to come.

June is Men’s Health Month. Research from the National Institute of Mental Health shows that men are often less likely to seek treatment for mental health conditions than women. Mental health conditions may also present differently in men — symptoms like anger, irritability, risk-taking behavior, and physical complaints such as headaches or digestive issues can be signs of underlying depression or anxiety.

The Trust works with partners across the state to help ensure that all Trust beneficiaries can access behavioral health services when they need them.

When a behavioral health crisis happens, timely, person-centered support can make a meaningful difference.

The Trust's Someone to Respond toolkit is a resource for implementing mobile behavioral health crisis response in Alaska. It is intended to support communities, providers, and partners working to strengthen local crisis response systems and expand access to care.

Mobile crisis response is an important part of a comprehensive behavioral health continuum of care, helping ensure Alaskans can receive support where they are and when they need it.
