As River Watch 2026 comes to a close, we want to thank the many communities, partners, and individuals who helped make this season possible.

From Eagle to Emmonak along the Yukon River, and communities all along the Kuskokwim River, thank you to everyone who shared river observations, provided transportation, welcomed crews into your communities, and helped keep neighbors informed and safe during breakup season.

A special thank you goes to local emergency managers, pilots, and community members across Alaska who worked together throughout this challenging breakup season. We are grateful for your support, your local knowledge, and your partnership.

River Watch 2026 is wrapping up, and we’re already preparing for 2027. Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management

River Watch crews observed fast-moving ice and encouraging conditions near Nunam Iqua Tuesday afternoon as breakup ice continues pushing toward the Bering Sea.

Aerial surveys showed strong ice movement through South Mouth, with enough pressure and open water for most ice to continue moving out toward the coast without significant jamming. However, crews are still closely monitoring remaining ice jams near Alakanuk Slough and Kwiguk Pass.

While conditions continue improving along parts of the lower Yukon, communities should remain alert for changing water levels and shifting ice conditions until all major ice movement has cleared the area.

Tuesday afternoon update from the Yukon River Watch Team:

The team flew to Kotlik this morning and observed water surrounding the runway, though it remains usable at this time.

The Middle Mouth is wide open with only scattered bits of ice.

In Emmonak, ice continues moving through the middle channel while water levels in town have remained steady so far. Kwiguk Pass is still jammed at the mouth though

At Nunam Iqua, ice is moving quickly and water levels remain near bankfull.

Alakanuk Slough is partially jammed

The Yukon River Watch Team is back in the air this morning heading to communities near the Yukon mouth to assess remaining ice runs and evaluate conditions near the coast. Currently, both Emmonak and Alakanuk are reporting flooding within their communities.

Yesterday, the team observed heavy runs of ice moving through nearly all major channels at the Yukon mouth, accompanied by rapidly rising water levels. One exception was Kwiguk Pass at Emmonak, where ice jammed and came to a stop yesterday evening. Water rose quickly in Emmonak overnight, as seen on the FAA camera loop, and the runway there is currently closed.

Quick afternoon update from our River Watch Team on the ground in Emmonak

05/25/2026

Yukon River Update — May 25, 11:30 AM:

The River Watch Crew just flew up to Emmonak and observed a 30–40 mile run of ice beginning to move past the community. Ice is flowing down both Kwiguk Pass in front of town and the main Yukon River channel.

The highest water levels were observed approximately 30–35 miles upstream, indicating that significantly higher water is still expected to move downstream into Emmonak over the coming hours.

Update from our Yukon River Watch Team in Nunam Iqua this afternoon:

The breakup front continues to steadily push through the remaining downstream in-place ice. However, there is still approximately 30 miles of heavy, bank-to-bank ice and high water moving downstream toward the coast. They also just reported that ice is now jammed at the mouth of Kwiguk Pass which will start to back water up at Emmonak.

Communities should continue to remain alert as additional rises in water levels and ice movement are still expected.
