It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brenda Bissell on August 25, 2024. Brenda was a pivotal figure in the founding of Dollars for Dogs in Anchorage. She was the wife of fallen APD Officer John Flora, who tragically lost his life on duty on September 8, 1975. Following her husband's passing, Brenda dedicated herself to raising funds, which were used to purchase APD's first two K9 dogs in 1976. This initial effort later developed into what is now known as Dollars for Dogs.

Today, Dollars for Dogs plays a vital role in providing APD's K9 Unit with dogs that are matched with officers. Each team comprises an Anchorage Police Officer trained as a dog handler alongside their assigned canine partner. These teams undergo specialized and ongoing training to ensure they are operating at the highest level to support patrol operations. Brenda’s legacy lives on through the continued work of Dollars for Dogs in serving the community and law enforcement. She will be dearly missed and remembered for her significant contributions.

Lower 48 organizations just don’t have a stake in our state’s future. When AFP undermines public safety, Alaskans suffer the consequences.
