It was brought to our attention from a Californian that we, Arctic Power, are destroying our planet. There's so much misinformation floating around regarding oil.

California is considered by many to be a very "green" state. They are certainly leaders in "green" laws, but the simple truth is that California is an oil state. Refineries located in California are taking in more oil than they did in 1982. California is also the third largest producer of oil in the United States.

Alaska oil production began to decline in the mid-1990's, and since then there has been an almost 1:1 replacement of Alaskan crude with imported crude (edit: to Californian refineries). We believe that the safeguards imposed by the United States, and the state government of Alaska, are far superior to those of developing nations.

We would much rather see oil responsibly developed on our shores before we need to rely on unsafe imports from overseas.

Arctic Power has been saying these things for years. Maybe after all of the trips we've taken to his former senate office, the message has gotten through.

"...Shell and other companies are going to be drilling somewhere over the course of these next years, because we're not going to suddenly be weaned from oil."

Alaska's oil "a cleaner oil than others."

Secretary of State John Kerry defended the Obama administration's decision to allow Shell to begin exploratory drilling for oil in the Arctic, even as the U.S. took the helm of the Arctic Council and put climate change atop the council's agenda.

"The oil and gas business is not new to Alaska’s North Slope. The industry and its supply chain are a significant source of jobs for native Alaskans, who are employed in field development, engineering, pipeline maintenance, property development and many other areas. Some studies predict that Arctic exploration has the potential to create and sustain 55,000 new jobs over the next several years, with nearly 100,000 jobs at peak employment."

BY REX ROCK - The Arctic is a region with an interest in striking a balance between environmental stewardship and economic growth. It is not a pristine snow globe that should be locked away in a museum of pretty places.

"The oil industry and the Department of Interior have characterized the Arctic outer continental shelf as a highly promising oil frontier. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the sister agency to BSEE, estimates that the U.S. portion of the Chukchi holds 15.4 billion barrels of recoverable oil and the U.S. portion of the Beaufort holds 8.2 billion barrels of recoverable oil."

The federal government has given Royal Dutch Shell the final permit it needs to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska's northwest coast for the first time in more than two decades.
