🚨 ACTION ALERT from Access Alaska 🚨
Tell Secretary Kennedy and Congress: PROTECT ACL PROGRAMS!

We need your voice to protect vital services for people with disabilities and older adults. The Administration for Community Living (ACL) was created to bring dignity, independence, and choice to our lives—but now, it’s at risk of being dismantled.

This restructuring could: ❌ Cut resources
❌ Add barriers
❌ Force people back into institutions
❌ Undo decades of disability rights progress

ACL programs keep people in their communities and reduce reliance on costly institutional care. These changes are being made with no transparency and no community input.

🛑 We must act NOW to defend our rights and services!

HERE'S HOW:

📞 1. Call Secretary Kennedy – 202-690-7000
➡ Sample message:
"I’m calling to urge Secretary Kennedy to work with the Independent Living Network and protect the programs administered by ACL. These services are critical to the independence and wellbeing of people with disabilities and older adults.”

📬 2. Contact your members of Congress

Medicaid isn’t just a budget item—it’s a lifeline for Alaskans with disabilities and seniors. Leaders from Hope Community Resources, The Arc of Anchorage, Access Alaska, Inc., and Cindy and Vic’s R&R, Inc. are speaking out against proposed Medicaid cuts that could jeopardize independence, care, and critical services for our friends, family, and neighbors.

These cuts would have real consequences for Alaskans who rely on Medicaid for home and community-based services, personal care, and essential supports. We must stand together to protect Medicaid and ensure that Alaskans can continue to live, work, and thrive in their communities.

🧠 March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month! 🧠

Did you know that Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of disability in Alaska? Each year, hundreds of Alaskans experience life-changing brain injuries due to falls, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries, or violence.

🔹 Alaska has one of the highest rates of TBI-related hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S.
🔹 Falls account for over 40% of TBIs in Alaska, especially among seniors and young children.
🔹 Rural Alaskans face higher risks due to limited access to medical care.
🔹 TBI can happen to anyone—its effects range from mild concussions to severe, long-term disabilities.

💡 Why Awareness Matters:
TBI isn’t just an injury—it can change a person’s ability to think, move, communicate, and regulate emotions. Early intervention, rehabilitation, and community support can make a huge difference in recovery and quality of life.

✅ How You Can Help:
✔️ Wear blue to show support!
✔️ Share this post to spread awareness.
✔️ Check in on a friend or loved one living with TBI.
✔️ Learn more about prevention and available resources.

🔗 Need support or have questions? Contact us at www.accessalaska.org
or 907-248-4777

Together, we can raise awareness, reduce risks, and support recovery! 💙

🚨 ALASKA: Section 504 is Under Attack 🚨

Alaska is one of 17 states in a lawsuit that threatens Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, a law that has protected the rights of people with disabilities for over 50 years. If this lawsuit succeeds, Alaskans with disabilities could lose essential protections in healthcare, education, employment, and public services. A court ruling is expected Tuesday, February 25 in Texas.

What’s at Stake for Alaskans?
If Section 504 is overturned, disability rights in Alaska will be severely impacted:

✅ Accessible healthcare – Hospitals and clinics receiving federal funding may no longer be required to provide ASL interpreters, accessible medical equipment, or alternative formats for medical documents.
✅ School accommodations – Students with disabilities may lose access to accommodations like extended testing time, assistive technology, or school nurses administering necessary medication.
✅ Public transportation – Features like audio announcements for bus stops, paratransit services, and wheelchair-accessible buses could be at risk.
✅ Workplace protections – Employers may no longer be required to provide reasonable accommodations such as flexible work schedules, assistive devices, or modified job duties.
✅ Voting rights – Accessible voting machines, wheelchair-accessible polling places, and ballot assistance for voters with disabilities could be removed.
✅ Public building accessibility – Federal buildings and services may no longer be required to have wheelchair-accessible entrances, ramps, and restrooms.
✅ Fair housing access – Individuals with disabilities could face increased barriers in obtaining housing that meets their accessibility needs.
✅ Outdoor accessibility – Alaska’s federally funded parks, trails, and recreational areas may no longer be required to provide accessible facilities.

Why This Matters for Alaska
Section 504 has helped build a more inclusive Alaska, ensuring equal access to essential services for thousands of Alaskans. It protects the rights of children in schools, workers on the job, patients in hospitals, and voters at the polls. Without it, many in our community will face unnecessary barriers and exclusion.

What Can You Do?
📢 Spread the word – Share this post and talk about it with your community.
📞 Contact your elected officials – Let them know Alaskans support disability rights.
📰 Stay informed – Follow updates and be prepared to take action.

Access Alaska stands firmly against this attack on disability rights. We must protect Section 504 to ensure equal access, dignity, and independence for all Alaskans.
