AFSA Chapter 1473, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson

AFSA Chapter 1473, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson To advocate improved quality-of-life benefits and economic fairness that will support the well-being of Air Force enlisted personnel and their families.

AFSA is the only association solely dedicated to representing enlisted men and women (like you) and your families. When AFSA speaks they listen … it’s more than just maintaining your existing allowances … it’s also about contributing to the discussion in a way that lawmakers better understand “your” needs. In fact, because of our reputation, AFSA has a by-name seat at the influential tables in bot

h the Congress and the Pentagon to help shape the tough policy decisions affecting the enlisted corps today.

Family Matters with Carey Crance, AFSA International Family Matters Trustee. | It’s finally the Weekend! How was your first week of summer? Kids are out in many places. Pools are open. Vacations are happening. It’s a great time of year.

As we are planning the fun things for our families and making sure we have all the things we need. Do you have the tools you need to have a fun, successful summer? I’m pretty sure you have the towels, sunblock, snacks, and new summer clothes. See, tools can be defined in many ways.

As you are planning trips, do you have the tools to ensure your voice, your family's voice, is still heard regardless of what you have going on? The tool I am referring to is votersvoice.org. Do you have that tool ready to go on your phone? We have several items we (AFSA) need your help with. Take a moment today, while you are on your phone, and let your elected leaders know you are in support of at least one key issue affecting military members, retirees, veterans, and/or families. Then once that is completed… comment “done” below.

FAMILY MATTERS FRIDAYS w/Carey Crance, AFSA International Family Matters Trustee | With many Division conventions over, we have several new people as part of the Division Executive Councils. Whether you were able to attend in person or on Zoom, you might be asking yourself what do some of these positions within the chapter really do? Because now your chapter might be looking for a replacement for someone who has moved up to the Division.

Where I may not have firsthand experience with all of the positions within a chapter, there is one position I feel pretty confident in telling you about. Of course, it’s Family Matters Trustee. Over the past month, I’ve spoken to several chapters, FMTs, and Divisions about what this role looks like at the chapter level. Here is what we’ve come up with…

- Be an AFSA member in good standing
- Have been an AFSA member for at least 90 days
- Be present and engaged with the local military community
- Attend at least 1 military-centered event every quarter, provide feedback on the event to your chapter and your Division FMT
- Be in contact with your Division FMT, provide them with feedback about current events and family member concerns; this helps the Division FMT during the monthly calls with the international FMT
- Be willing and able to be the FMT for the full term as outlined in the bylaws
- When vacating the position, provide incoming FMT with AAR
- Have a good working relationship with M&FR if at an active duty chapter
- Have character traits to be successful in this position

A Family Matters Trustee is very important to any chapter or Division. They can be part of conversations that our military members cannot. The FMT can be an extra voice and ear for ALL of our members.
