A table is just a table... until you think about the stories it holds.

For 13 years, this table was where coworkers shared lunches, celebrated milestones, solved problems, and built friendships. Thanks to the generosity of a local small business, it now has a new home at Alaska Police and Fire Chaplains.

This table will continue bringing people together as our chaplains, volunteers, and community partners gather to support first responders, their families, and our communities.

A special thank you to the friends and volunteers who donated their time, trucks, muscles, and energy to help move it. We couldn't do this work without people like you.

As we continue refreshing our chaplaincy office, we are reminded that every gift matters. Whether it's a table, a few hours of volunteer time, a prayer, or a financial contribution, you help us continue serving those who serve.

Some names are spoken less with time. Some stories get quieter. But today, we remember the men and women whose service never truly ended, because they gave everything in the line of duty to our nation.

Memorial Day is not only about flags and ceremonies. It is about empty seats at family tables, lifelong grief carried by loved ones, and the responsibility we all share to remember lives marked by courage and sacrifice.

At Alaska Police and Fire Chaplains, we stand alongside those who continue carrying that loss, including veterans, first responders, families, and our community.

May we honor the fallen not only with words today, but by how we care for one another moving forward.

Today, we continue to honor the life and legacy of Officer Kermit “Kip” Mosher, a man who dedicated his life to serving others with humility, integrity, and quiet strength.

A proud veteran, respected Anchorage Police Department officer of 20yrs , coach, mentor, husband, father, and grandfather, Kip left a lasting impact on countless lives throughout Alaska. Those who knew him knew a man of calm presence, deep character, and unwavering commitment to his family, his community, and the people he served.

It was an honor for Alaska Police & Fire Chaplains to stand alongside his family, friends, fellow officers, and community as we helped serve during his memorial and final honors. Moments like these remind us why our mission matters.

For more than 45 years, Alaska Police & Fire Chaplains has been committed to serving those who serve, their families, and the communities they protect. Whether walking beside first responders in times of crisis, supporting families through grief, or simply being present when it matters most, we are honored to carry that responsibility forward.

Officer Mosher’s life was a reflection of service above self, and we are grateful for the opportunity to honor his memory.

Please continue to keep the Mosher family, his law enforcement family, and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers.

Fire Chief George Burns
May 19, 1964

On the evening of May 19, 1964, Fire Chief George Burns left his office at Old Station 1 a little early to attend a special presentation banquet honoring and recognizing him for his years of service with the city and local area and his actions following the Good Friday earthquake a couple months prior. He never made it to the banquet; he suffered a severe stroke and heart attack.

Chief Burns honorably served as Chief for the Anchorage Fire Department for 15 years, and before that, three years as Fire Chief at Ft. Richardson. Thank you for your service, sir.

In 2025, the Anchorage Fire Department received the U.S. Secretary of Defense Freedom Award. As a part of the recognition, Chief Schrage traveled to Joint Base Myer-Henderson along with the other award recipients for a VIP reception and the 2026 Twilight Tattoo.

The Freedom Award recognizes AFD's actions and commitment to support Guard and Reserve members in our ranks.
