Sixth grade parents-if you don’t mind, please double check that no library books were brought home today after the locker clean outs. If so, you may drop them off at the library in the morning before the program.

Al flags are lowered today in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Mayor Earl Johnson has ordered that the city flags shall remain lowered through Tuesday morning in memory of Cathy Powell, whose contributions to our community have made lasting impacts.

Mrs. Powell was the consummate educator, who loved and continued learning throughout her teaching career. She had a gift for seeing the potential in every child.

Her lessons extended outside of the school walls and onto local stages and into rooms used for art instruction, where she spent her free time directing productions and teaching art camps. Her students’ work echoes along with her own voice in the memories of “Annie,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Willie Wonka,” and is framed on many a local wall.

But perhaps the ultimate lesson she taught us was in showing us how to find joy in life even in the face of a debilitating illness.

Her impact and example will not soon be forgotten.
