Did you know that in 2010, Rosa's Law (Public Law 111-256) changed the language used in federal laws?

It replaced an outdated and hurtful term with “intellectual disability.”

This was an important step toward treating people with greater dignity and respect.

💜 October is Rett Syndrome Awareness Month! 💜

What are the symptoms of Rett syndrome?

Every person with Rett syndrome is unique, and so are their symptoms. Symptoms most often become noticeable after a period of typical early development, followed by regression between approximately 6 and 18 months of age.

Symptoms may include:

🤲 Repetitive hand movements, such as hand wringing, clapping, or squeezing
🗣️ Changes in speech and communication skills
🚶 Challenges with walking, balance, coordination, or movement
💪 Changes in muscle tone or strength
⚡ Seizures
🫁 Breathing abnormalities while awake
🦴 Scoliosis or other changes affecting the spine
😴 Sleep difficulties
🍽️ Feeding and swallowing difficulties
💓 Heart rhythm abnormalities

Not everyone with Rett syndrome experiences the same symptoms, and the severity can vary greatly.

📣 Awareness leads to understanding. Understanding leads to acceptance and better support.

This month, Hopewell Center is proud to join the Rett community in raising awareness, building understanding, and celebrating the people behind the diagnosis.

Think about what having a job means to you.

It's more than earning a paycheck. It's about independence, confidence, building relationships, developing skills, and having a place in your community.

People with disabilities deserve those same opportunities.

As we continue recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), we're celebrating the importance of meaningful employment and the businesses that help make it possible.

💙 At Hopewell Center, we believe employment should reflect a person's abilities, interests, and goals.

Through our Community Employment Services Program, we help people with disabilities explore career opportunities, prepare for employment, find jobs that match their strengths, and receive ongoing support to succeed.

💙 Stacy's story is an important reminder that disabilities and barriers to employment aren't always visible. Access to food is a basic human need, and no one should have to choose between meeting that need and navigating complex systems to receive support. We must continue listening to people with disabilities and ensuring their experiences inform decisions that affect their lives.

“Taking away our food is the last thing that should be done. Please don't make things even more difficult for the people who need help the most."

Stacy recently lost her food assistance, through SNAP, after being considered “able-bodied” and not working. She is autistic, has ADHD, and is applying for disability benefits, but that process takes time.

Stacy’s story shows what SNAP cuts and expanded work requirements can mean for people with disabilities. SNAP helps millions of people with disabilities afford food, and losing these benefits can make it even harder to get by.

At Hopewell Center, we believe nursing is about more than medications, assessments, and medical appointments. It's about protecting someone's health while honoring their dignity, choices, and dreams.

Our nurses partner with dedicated Direct Support Professionals who show up every day to help the people we support live full, independent, and meaningful lives.

We're looking for TWO part-time Registered Nurses to join that mission!

Both opportunities offer approximately 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling.
