High risk low frequency incidents happen more than you most realize. Just yesterday in Anderson County there were two pretty much back to back calls for an MVA with a vehicle VS house. It’s important to be able to recognize the hazard’s associated with incidents like this and be able to properly stabilize the structure when necessary.
During the upcoming rescue training for September we’re going to shift our focus from ropes and begin to scratch the surface with some very simple shoring training. Training is still in the planning phase and a date will be announced in the coming days. During this training we’re going to cover structure assessments, hazards to look for, recognizing load paths and what’s structural and what’s not, and get into temporary shoring utilizing the HURST Air Shores that are in the collapse trailer as well as the Paratech struts on the rescue truck.
The goal for the remainder of the year will be to recognize the hazards and place temporary shoring, begin with learning about permanent wood shoring allowing members to understand how they’re built, the strengths and weaknesses of them, and lastly replacing the temporary shores with permanent shores to leave in place!
