Three years ago, I purchased through donations from family and friends - a row of slave dwellings for $5k from The Palmetto Trust. They are located in my hometown at 310 Morris Street in Anderson, SC. I felt at the time an urgency to restore and preserve these structures for their historical re...

Good Morning All!

My partner and I have an idea...

We'd like to bring back the video version of Under the Kudzu.

We are still brainstorming this but the initial thought is that we would produce a monthly video in the same style as the original...a guest historian or subject matter expert would work with our team to write the script. Our team can shoot the B-Roll or the SME can provide pictures or a mix thereof. Two and Half to four minutes long and we premiere each episode on the 1st of the month.

We'd need a list of willing lecturers or at least of list of those we should approach and ask. Passionate and Accurate about what they do. Maybe a small team could get together and vote on who we approach after reviewing their information, background, etc....

We honestly don't want this to be too difficult but we would have to agree on some standards.

Possibly a name change to the program as well...instead of just Under the Kudzu...'Brian Scott presents Under the Kudzu".

This would obviously be a work of passion and is intended to continue telling the history and culture of the Upstate as Brian did.

So there it is....Thoughts from the field?

Hey Everyone. The sad news about Brian has all of us devastated.
I've worked with Brian on many projects for several years and his passion and love of history, especially local history, was beyond contagious. Under the Kudzu is an amazing project and was so close to his heart. We are going to keep this page up and running and though I'm no where near the historian that Brian was, I think we can find a way to keep it going and keep it engaging and educational for everyone, I think he would have wanted that.

I am pleased to announce the publication of my latest book, "No Means, No Government, No Hope: Anderson, SC, After the Civil War" the story of the 'battle' and occupation of Anderson.

May 1, 1865: An accidental meeting between cadets and Federal troops resulted in the last land battle of the Civil War east of the Mississippi. Just a few hours later, in the midst of Anderson, annual May Day festival, over two thousand Federal troops invaded and occupied the town. For three days, Anderson was held hostage as leading citizens were tortured, buildings were ransacked, and a supply of wine kept the soldiers’ fires from burning the town. The battle and occupation claimed the lives of four men, including one African-American.

Copies of "No Means, No Government, No Hope" are available by clicking the link below or by visiting the Anderson County Museum.

The shooting at Mother Emanuel Church sparked a renewed interest in erecting historical markers documenting the African-American experience in the state that was long overdue. This is one such marker in Abbeville.

The Lynching of Anthony Crawford In Abbeville on Saturday, October 21, 1916, a white mob lynched a black leader named Anthony Crawford for cursing a white man. (A historical marker located in Abbeville in Abbeville County, South Carolina.)
