The Karner blue butterfly is an endangered pollinator species. Their main threat is due to habitat loss. It is small with about a one-inch wingspan and a short life span of a few days to weeks. In Minnesota, only a few places have their ideal habitat, one of which is the Anoka Sand Plain.

Females are a darker blue with orange crescents (like pictured), and males are a lighter blue. Karner blue caterpillars only feed on wild lupine, tending to grow in sandy soils. Habitat loss is the main reason for their struggle, and planting more native plants is the best way to support pollinators like the Karner blue butterfly.

Minnesota’s official state bee is the rusty patched bumble bee. They have a mostly yellow upper thorax, with a black spot or band between the wings. Workers also have a distinctive rust-colored patch on their abdomen where they get their name. 🐝

In recent years, they have declined from approximately 87% of its historic range. They have been observed in a variety of habitats, including prairies, woodlands, marshes, agricultural landscapes, parks, and gardens. 🏡

Rusty patched bumble bees require a constant and diverse supply of flowers to meet their nutritional needs throughout their four-to-six-week life cycle. To help them, plant a variety of native flowers that bloom throughout spring, summer, and fall. You can also participate in count studies throughout the state.🌼

In late April, our Natural Resources team and research teams from the University of Minnesota Montgomery Lab planted a variety of tree seedling species in research plots at Bunker Hills, C**n Rapids Dam, and Rum River Central Regional Parks. The research is focused on improving restoration planting success in oak-wilt-deforested sites by looking at associated fungal partnerships and pathogens. 🌳

The tree species planted were bur oak, northern red oak, black cherry, red maple, basswood, and yellow birch, all species native to Anoka County. The seedlings will be measured for growth over several growing seasons and then dug up to sample and sequence the fungi and pathogens present. This data will help inform what to reforest oak-wilt-degraded areas with in the future and will certainly be interesting no matter the findings.💡

Enjoy FREE entrance into the parks on Tuesday, June 9. 😎

Now that summer is here, water is likely on your mind. There are four designated public swimming beaches to visit. 🏖️

🔹 Lake George
🔹 C**n Lake
🔹 Island Lake
🔹 Centerville Lake

There are no lifeguards on duty, and hours are from 9 am to 8 pm daily. Find plenty of shade trees, maintained turf areas, picnic tables, and more for a great day. 🌳

You can also access 15 different boat launches throughout the parks. Don’t forget about the scheduled water recreation activities like learn to stand-up paddle board offered on select days during the summer. 🛶

From late spring to early summer, painted turtles and snapping turtles are active throughout the parks as they look for nesting sites on land. These turtles will seek out open areas with looser soils to lay their eggs, including lawns and near the edges of roads. Painted Turtles will typically lay 2 to 20 eggs, while snapping turtles will more commonly lay 20 to 30 eggs. 🐢🥚
