Well, the SPC went ahead and did it… they upgraded a part of eastern KS to an Enhanced (3/5) risk for today, and of course it was our part of eastern KS.
Storms are most likely to occur east of I-135 today. And the first storms are more likely to pop up to our north (after 4pm) and then start pushing our way… but there is still a little variability in the “where” and “when” parts of the forecast. (Forecasters are watching to see where the cold front goes and how quickly it goes there.)
As for the hazards: the earlier storms are predicted to be capable of very large hail, but later on in the evening, they may switch their specialty to damaging winds. However… down here in our part of the risk area, we may add our own special flair. Forecasters think a small pocket of extremely potent storm fuel may develop in the south central/Flint Hills area. And unfortunately, that area may have a more elevated tornado threat this evening – higher than the rest of the Enhanced zone. And, yes, we’re squarely in the middle of that elevated bubble. (If today’s hazards were laid out on a buffet, we would NOT choose this part. The heavy rainfall – we’d take some of the heavy rainfall and leave the rest.) Pay close attention to where storms are going and what they’re up to this evening, just in case they do decide to get extra rowdy around here. (Rainfall… we just want the rainfall.)
