New tennis courts are coming to Hawkeye Park. Contractors for the City of Ankeny will begin work on the Hawkeye Park Tennis Courts Reconstruction Project during the week of June 8, 2026. The tennis courts will be closed to the public during construction. Work is expected to be completed by the end of September, weather permitting.

The project will replace the existing courts with six new tennis courts and include new perimeter fencing, wind screens, energy-efficient court lighting and a tennis practice backboard. These improvements will improve the quality, safety and functionality of the tennis complex while expanding recreational opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels.

During construction, the Hawkeye Park tennis courts will be closed and inaccessible to the public. Residents are encouraged to use the tennis courts at Greentree Park and Prairie Ridge Sports Complex while work is underway.

The City appreciates the public's patience and understanding during construction and looks forward to reopening the new courts this fall. This project is part of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), a five-year plan that guides how we maintain and improve streets, utilities, parks, and other public infrastructure.

Congratulations to the Ankeny Police Traffic Unit on being recognized with the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau Commissioner's Award for Community Engagement.

This award recognizes individuals, teams and organizations that demonstrate excellence in educating the public on traffic safety through innovative community outreach, social media engagement and public education initiatives. The Traffic Unit earned this recognition through its commitment to traffic safety education, including community events, social media campaigns, hands-free driving enforcement efforts, Road Rules educational presentations, senior driving workshops and a unique program that offers residents one-on-one assistance setting up hands-free features in their vehicles.

Their work helped place Ankeny Police among the leading agencies in Iowa for educational contacts related to the state's Hands-Free Law, reinforcing the message that safer driving habits save lives. This recognition comes during a historic year for traffic safety in Iowa. In 2025, Iowa recorded the lowest annual number of traffic fatalities in the 100-year history of the state's record keeping, surpassing both the 2024 total and the previous record low set in 1925. While there is still work to do, this achievement highlights the impact that education, enforcement and community partnerships can have on improving roadway safety. The members of our Traffic Unit work every day to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and keep Ankeny's roadways safe through a balanced approach of education, enforcement and community engagement.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your dedication to traffic safety and service to our community!

💧 Why is Central Iowa Water Works asking customers to voluntarily reduce outdoor water use by 50%?

Right now, our regional water system is operating under significant stress.

To continue providing safe, reliable drinking water, CIWW has been:
🔹 Operating the Nitrate Removal Facility since January 6, 2026.
🔹 Withdrawing water from Maffitt Reservoir since January 19, a backup source typically reserved until Summer (if needed at all)
🔹 Using water stored in our Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) wells
🔹 Utilizing all seven water treatment plants

These resources are important tools that help us maintain water quality and meet customer demand, but they are not unlimited.

💡Outdoor irrigation can account for 30–40% of total drinking water use during the spring and summer.

‼️Small changes - like skipping a watering day or watering only where needed - can have an immediate impact on regional water demand.

‼️By voluntarily reducing outdoor water use by 50%, we can help preserve these critical water supplies, maintain reliable service, and ensure safe drinking water remains available throughout the summer.

Every gallon saved today helps protect our water supply for tomorrow.
