Congratulations to the Ankeny Police Traffic Unit on being recognized with the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau Commissioner's Award for Community Engagement on June 4, 2026.

This award recognizes individuals, teams and organizations that demonstrate excellence in educating the public on traffic safety through innovative community outreach, social media engagement and public education initiatives.

The Traffic Unit earned this recognition through its commitment to traffic safety education, including community events, social media campaigns, hands-free driving enforcement efforts, Road Rules educational presentations, senior driving workshops and a unique program that offers residents one-on-one assistance setting up hands-free features in their vehicles.

Their work helped place Ankeny Police among the leading agencies in Iowa for educational contacts related to the state's Hands-Free Law, reinforcing the message that safer driving habits save lives.

This recognition comes during a historic year for traffic safety in Iowa. In 2025, Iowa recorded the lowest annual number of traffic fatalities in the 100-year history of the state's record keeping, surpassing both the 2024 total and the previous record low set in 1925.

While there is still work to do, this achievement highlights the impact that education, enforcement and community partnerships can have on improving roadway safety.

The members of our Traffic Unit work every day to reduce crashes, prevent injuries and keep Ankeny's roadways safe through a balanced approach of education, enforcement and community engagement.

Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your dedication to traffic safety and service to our community.

Not every call for service comes through dispatch.

Between calls today, Ofc. Madi and Ofc. Kurt made a stop at a neighborhood lemonade stand on Ankeny's northeast side to support two young entrepreneurs working hard on a warm day.

A couple cups of lemonade, some great conversation and a few smiles made for a memorable stop.

Made up of three officers and one sergeant, our Traffic Unit works to keep Ankeny’s roads safe. They focus on traffic enforcement, special event coordination, school bus violations, hit-and-run investigations, and responding to resident concerns.

The unit also conducts traffic studies, leads special enforcement on distracted and impaired driving, speed, and seat belt use, and partners with the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau on statewide safety efforts.

Their goal: safer roads for everyone in Ankeny.

Vandalism affects more than property. It impacts neighborhoods, businesses and the overall sense of safety in our community.

We need your help to keep Ankeny safe. Prevention starts with simple, proactive steps:

• Keep properties well lit. Effective lighting is a proven deterrent.
• Install and maintain security cameras if you are able. Multiple vandalism investigations have been aided by security cameras capturing those responsible.
• Remove graffiti, trash or damaged debris from the property to prevent repeated incidents.
• Lock vehicles, garages and outbuildings.
• Talk with your neighbors and stay aware of suspicious activity.

If you discover vandalism, report it. Even if the damage appears minor, reporting helps us identify patterns, increase patrol presence and hold offenders accountable.

If it is happening now, call 911. For non-emergency reporting, contact our non-emergency line at 515-286-3333 ext. 5.

Community vigilance and timely reporting make a difference. Help us protect what makes Ankeny a great place to live and work.

As we head into the summer break, more people will be enjoying the High Trestle Trail and crossing West 1st Street near the Ankeny Market & Pavilion (AMP).

To help keep everyone safe, Ankeny Police want to make sure everyone knows what to do at this intersection of vehicles and pedestrians.

Here’s how the HAWK pedestrian crosswalk signal works:

• Pedestrians: Press the button and wait for the signal to activate before crossing.
• The light will flash yellow, then turn solid red, requiring drivers to stop.
• Begin crossing only when traffic has stopped and it is safe to do so.
• Drivers: When the signal turns solid red, you must stop and remain stopped until pedestrians have cleared the crosswalk. when the red lights begin to flash, drivers can proceed through after stopping if the crosswalk is clear.

Whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, stay alert and watch for others using the crossing so everyone can safely enjoy the trail this spring.

Ankeny, Iowa (May 28, 2026) – The Ankeny Police Department completed its investigation into the March 24, 2026, vehicle collision that injured 16 children in the after school pickup line at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic School.

During the investigation, Ankeny Police conducted 32 interviews, executed search warrants, completed a mechanical inspection of the vehicle and submitted blood samples from the driver for laboratory testing to determine if the driver was impaired at the time of the collision. Lab results did not support OWI charges.

The investigation determined the 76-year-old driver involved in the collision mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while approaching the school pickup line, causing the vehicle to move forward into students waiting to be picked up.

The completed case was presented to the Polk County Attorney’s Office for legal review and charge consideration. After reviewing all facts and evidence gathered during the investigation, it was determined there was no legal basis for criminal charges in this case. Because criminal charges are not being filed, the identity of the driver will not be released publicly.

All children injured in the collision were treated and released from the hospital. The Ankeny Police Department continues to keep the children who are still recovering, along with their families, classmates, school staff and the broader community in our thoughts.

Ankeny Police and Fire also recognize that the quick actions of several community members, parents, school staff and first responders in the immediate aftermath of the collision had a profound impact on the outcome of children involved in this incident.

With the investigation complete and no criminal charges being filed, no further information related to this incident will be released.
