Amid federal funding and program cuts and shifts, and efforts to criminalize homelessness, we must all advocate against policy and funding shifts that are harmful to those experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity.

Earlier this month, WHA's Shared Housing Program Coordinator had the privilege of co-presenting at the Building Michigan Communities Conference in Lansing, Michigan's largest annual gathering of affordable housing professionals, with over 1,200 attendees from across the state.

WHA's Coordinator, Danielle, was joined by Janet Hunko, Executive Director of Housing Bureau for Seniors, and Lana Payne, Director of Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, who joined the presentation by video from Traverse City. Together they talked about how WHA's Shared Housing Program was built, what we have learned from our first matches, and how communities across Michigan can replicate this model.

The fact that Grand Traverse County is already exploring shared housing tells you something. This is not an issue unique to Ann Arbor. Communities all over Michigan are sitting on empty bedrooms while people struggle to find affordable places to live and many older adults spend too much time alone.

What we are building in Washtenaw County can be a template. The model does not require building anything new. It requires coordination, a solid matching process, and community trust.

If you are a housing professional, policymaker, or organization curious about what replication could look like in your community, WHA would love to connect!

And if you are in Washtenaw County and have a spare bedroom or need an affordable place to live, start here: whalliance.org/sharedhousing

ICYMI: Many thanks to the The City Of Ann Arbor City Council and Mayor Taylor for supporting increased funding for the Rising Hope for Housing Program in the FY27 City budget. This program was envisioned by Councilmember Cynthia Harrison and helps households, who have been impacted by the justice system, increase housing stability and self-sufficiency.

Advocates for ending homelessness and expanding affordable housing should be paying attention to the upcoming FY2027 federal budget negotiations - and taking action to contact Congress. The President's budget proposal for FY2027 (Oct 1, 2026 to Sept 30, 2027) drastically cuts funding for homelessness and housing programs.
