🎉 Happy Juneteenth from Washtenaw County!

Surrounded by community, Washtenaw County proudly raised the Juneteenth flag for the 6th year in a row! This meaningful ceremony, facilitated by the Racial Equity Office, , honored the legacy of freedom and the continued work toward justice and equity in our communities.

We were inspired by an incredible lineup of voices:
🎤 Returning Master of Ceremony: Akintunde Oluwadare
💬 County Commissioners: Justin Hodge and Katie Scott
🗣️ Keynote Speaker and honoree: Omer Jean Winborn, who reminded us all of the power of telling your own story
📖 Poetry Readings: Venus Pasha, Aurora Love, and Ruth Mella

Their words lifted our spirits and deepened our commitment to truth, equity, and inclusion. Thank you to everyone who joined us as we celebrate freedom, resilience, and Black excellence.

As part of our year-long Bicentennial celebration, we're inviting YOU to the Washtenaw County Youth Rodeo, a FREE evening of family fun, agricultural education, and rodeo excitement!

📍 Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds

🕒 3:00 – 9:00 PM

Whether you're from Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Saline, Chelsea, or anywhere in between, this event is for YOU. We've partnered with MSU Extension and 4-H to celebrate the rich agricultural heritage that has shaped our county, and to bring our urban, suburban, and rural communities together in one place.

🎉 Here's what's in store:
3:00 PM – Doors Open
3:00–6:00 PM – Hustle line dancing, MSU Extension & 4-H exhibits, face painting, petting zoo, inflatable games, and food vendors (with FREE options!)
6:30 PM – Live music with DeWayne Spaw & Rodeo Introduction
7:00 PM – 🤠 Rodeo Begins!
9:00 PM – Event Concludes

Last week, Board Chair Commissioner Katie Scott joined Paul W. Smith on WJR as part of the Pure Michigan Tour to talk about Washtenaw County’s Bicentennial and what makes our community such a special place to call home.

🎉 What a way to kick off Washtenaw County's Bicentennial events!

Earlier this month, Washtenaw County hosted our inaugural State of the County. The event was a celebration of this incredible community and a look at the road ahead as we reach 200 years.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this such a memorable moment. The festivities are just getting started! Stay tuned for upcoming bicentennial events, including Underground Railroad Tours on May 30th and June 21st (sign up here: aachm.org/event-details/washtenaw-county-bicentennial-tours) and the Washtenaw County Youth Rodeo on June 26th.
