We are excited to announce the promotion of Kory Petterle to the rank of Lieutenant.

Lt. Petterle joined the Ann Arbor Police Department in 2015 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2021.

Most recently, Lt. Petterle served as the Special Services Sergeant, overseeing major events and operations, including this summer’s back-to-back concerts and University of Michigan football game days.

Please join us in celebrating Lt. Petterle on this well-deserved promotion and recognizing his exceptional commitment to public safety, community leadership, and continuous innovation.

Welcome Week Safety Message from Chief Andre C. Anderson

As we head into the weekend activities, AAPD recognizes that there may be many celebratory venues and gatherings happening throughout the community. Large gatherings on Greenwood Avenue and other welcome week parties will attract lots of people, including the police department. We wholeheartedly encourage everyone to enjoy welcome week and make the most of this exciting time, but we also want to remind you to prioritize safety. This will be our priority as well.

Historically, incidents reported during this period have included acts of arson, fights, and other situations that required police intervention. Our primary goal is to ensure that any actions disturbing the community’s continuity are addressed quickly and effectively, with an emphasis on keeping everyone safe.

You can expect your police to be attentive to safety concerns and to act promptly to address any issues that may arise. We are committed to supporting a positive and secure environment for all.

Let’s work together to make welcome week enjoyable and safe for everyone.

Attempted Armed Robbery

On August 27, 2026, at approximately 1:50 p.m., officers responded to Ann Arbor Stamps & Coins, located in the 3000 block of Washtenaw Avenue, for a reported robbery.

The preliminary investigation indicates that an adult male entered the business and produced a firearm. During the incident, a clerk also produced a firearm and fired one shot.

No one was struck by the gunfire, and no injuries were reported. The suspect fled the business on foot with another adult male who was already inside the business at the time of the incident. An image of the second male, who is considered a person of interest in connection with the incident, is attached.

Responding officers searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate either man. Nothing was taken from the business.

The Purple Run is a 5K fun run and walk presented in partnership by the Ann Arbor Police Department, University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security, Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, and SafeHouse Center. What began as a collaborative community event has grown into an annual opportunity to stand together in support of survivors while strengthening awareness of domestic violence throughout Washtenaw County.

As classes begin next week, we want the community to be aware that more children will be walking, biking, and crossing streets, so please slow down, stay alert, and watch out for one another.

Please do your part to help keep everyone safe.

Drivers:
•SLOW DOWN in school zones.
•STOP for school buses when red lights are flashing, it’s the law.
•Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.
•Watch carefully for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections.

Students:
•Use crosswalks and sidewalks.
•Walk or bike with a buddy when possible.
•Stay alert and put the phone away while walking.

Cyclists:
•Wear a helmet every ride.
•Ride with traffic and follow all traffic signals.

Welcome Back, U-M Students.

As you settle into a new semester in Ann Arbor, we want to welcome you to the community and share a few important safety reminders.

Every year, thousands of students arrive in Ann Arbor ready for a new school year. Your safety is our priority, and we all play a role in creating a safe and welcoming community for all.

If you live off campus, remember to:
•LOCK UP – Secure the doors and windows of your home, apartment, and vehicle.
•SECURE YOUR VALUABLES – Keep bikes, phones, laptops, and other valuables secured, and record serial numbers when possible.
•STAY ALERT – Be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking at night or in unfamiliar areas.
•HAVE A PLAN – Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be home.
•KNOW THE RULES – Familiarize yourself with City of Ann Arbor ordinances and community expectations.
•REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY – Call 911 for emergencies or 734-994-2911 for non-emergency situations.

As students return, Ann Arbor Police Officers will be focused on your safety with an emphasis on community policing and engagement.

Remember, Michigan's Medical Amnesty Law provides protections for minors who seek medical assistance for alcohol-related emergencies. If someone needs help, don't hesitate to call 911.

The following closures are in effect now through 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026

Division Street: One way southbound between Hoover Avenue and Hill Street.

Greene Street: One way northbound between Hoover Avenue and Hill Street.
Thompson Street: One way southbound from Jefferson Street to Packard Street. Parking meters will be bagged.

Madison Street: Closed from Division Street to Thompson Street. One way eastbound from

Thompson Street to South State Street. Parking meters will be bagged.

Observatory Street: One way southbound from East Ann Street to Geddes Avenue. Parking meters will be bagged.

East Washington Street: One way westbound from Fletcher Street to Thayer Street. Parking meters will be bagged.

Maynard Street: Parking meters will be bagged from Jefferson Street to East William Street.

East University Avenue: Parking meters will be bagged between Hill Street and Willard Street.
