PROMOTION - September 8, 2026
Congratulations to Matthew Hughes, badge 131, who has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief! DC Hughes began with the fire department on February 19, 1996. He has promoted through every rank in the operations division. DC Hughes has a bachelor degree from Columbia Southern and is a graduate of the Eastern Michigan University - Fire School of Staff and Command.

Deputy chief is a new rank to AAFD in the modern era; archives going back 75 years show no mention of it. This position provides for leadership continuity and is congruent with other similar size departments within the region. The rank of assistant chief has been removed from the current organizational structure.

DC Hughes will be responsible for the operations, emergency medical services, and training divisions along with leading numerous projects and initiatives.

SNEAK PEAK - September 6, 2026
We have taken delivery of new Engine 1-4. It is an E-One Typhoon. There is a lot of radio wiring and equipment mounting to occur. It is planned to go in-service in late October. It just got back from lettering at GraphX in Plymouth

NEW AMBULANCE - GO BLUE
A new maize-and-blue ambulance with a design reminiscent of a University of Michigan football helmet is joining the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department - Government fleet - and just in time for the Michigan Football home opener. The University of Michigan provided $346,000 for the new 2026 Wheeled Coach Type III Ambulance. While its distinctive maize-and-blue appearance gives U of M Football a nod, the ambulance will serve an important public safety role citywide, providing additional emergency medical transport capacity in high demand instances, such as during football games and concerts at Michigan Stadium and the Ann Arbor Art Fair https://www.a2gov.org/news/posts/maize-and-blue-ambulance-rolls-into-service-in-ann-arbor-ahead-of-michigan-football-home-opener/

EQUIPMENT GRANT - September 3, 2026
The Ann Arbor Fire Department recently received a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services - Bureau of Emergency Preparedness, EMS, and Systems of Care. This was a collaborative opportunity with the Michigan EMS for Children Program to support EMS agencies through reimbursement for the purchase of Ground Ambulance Pediatric Restraint Systems (GAPRS) to safely transport pediatric patients in ground ambulances.

The total grant amount was $9,180 for three pediatric restraint systems: one of each of our ambulances. The restraints were purchased through Stryker, which is the brand of our cot system.

Ann Arbor Fire and Police departments to hold Sept. 11 memorial service
ANN ARBOR, Michigan, Sept. 2, 2026 — The Ann Arbor Fire Department and Ann Arbor Police Department will host a memorial service Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and remember all who lost their lives that day.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. in front of Fire Station No. 1, 111 N. Fifth Ave., and is expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

The memorial service will honor all who died in the attacks, including the 343 New York City firefighters and 60 officers from the New York City Police Department and Port Authority Police Department who were killed in the line of duty.

Remarks will be given by Fire Chief Mike Kennedy, Police Chief Andre C. Anderson, City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr., Mayor Christopher Taylor and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell.

The event will be livestreamed on the City of Ann Arbor page.

NEW FIRE STATION 4
The new Ann Arbor Fire Station 4 will be located at 2415 S. Huron Parkway. The Grand Opening and Dedication will occur on October 30, 2026. The new fire station will be the city's first carbon-neutral facility with geothermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and other energy efficiency actions. Beyond aligning with the city's A2ZERO carbon neutrality goals, the project will also accommodate today's needs for gender neutrality in terms of showering, bathrooms, and sleeping quarters.

APPRECIATION AWARD
Paul Matthews works for the City of Ann Arbor as the Public Works Manager in Public Services. Mr. Matthews has been a key partner for the fire department and emergency management on numerous projects. He also is our primary point of contact for heavy equipment during fires where the structure became unstable. Following the April 15, 2026, Mr. Matthews lead debris removal efforts, coordinating multiple crews over multiple days. For his efforts, Mr. Matthews was presented with an "Appreciation Award" during a recent ceremony
