When Temperatures Rise, So Do Safety Risks

As we experience our first heat wave of the summer, Annandale Hose Company would like to remind everyone to stay cool, stay hydrated, and check in on family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who may be vulnerable to the heat.

Hot weather often brings an increase in emergency calls, including heat-related illnesses, outdoor fires, alarm activations, and fast-moving summer storms. As temperatures rise, it’s a good time to review your emergency plans and make sure your household is prepared.

We’ve also seen a recent increase in smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarm activations throughout our community. While not every alarm indicates an emergency, every alarm should be taken seriously.
When firefighters arrive, we use specialized monitoring equipment to check for carbon monoxide, natural gas, smoke, and other hazardous conditions. Residents are often asked to wait outside while crews investigate.

Our goal is simple: identify the source, ensure the building is safe, and help everyone get back to normal as quickly as possible. A few summer safety reminders:

• Test your smoke and CO alarms regularly.
• Replace batteries and detectors that have reached the end of their service life.
• Have HVAC and fuel-burning appliances inspected and maintained routinely.
• Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do if an alarm sounds.
• Have a plan for pets if you need to evacuate.

Doors and windows may be opened during an emergency investigation or while a building is being ventilated, so keeping pets secured and accounted for can help prevent an already stressful situation from becoming more complicated.

Most importantly, if a smoke or CO alarm activates, don’t ignore it or assume it’s a false alarm. Move to a safe location, call 911, and let emergency responders determine if a hazard exists.

The volunteers of Annandale Hose Company are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
If you think something is wrong, trust your instincts and call for help, dial 911. We’d much rather investigate an alarm and find nothing than have someone ignore a warning sign that turns out to be an emergency.

Stay safe, stay cool, and enjoy the summer!

Hot Weather, Hot Engines, Multiple Calls

While many in the community were staying cool during yesterday afternoon’s heat, volunteers from Annandale Hose Company (46), Lebanon Borough Fire Company (18), and 36 Rescue responded to multiple emergencies across the area.

Crews were first dispatched to a vehicle fire on Interstate 78 that spread into nearby grass due to the dry, hot conditions. The fire was quickly contained before it could spread further down the median. While units were still operating there, a second call came in for a smoke investigation near a business on Route 22, requiring additional emergency resources.

Hot weather can put extra strain on vehicles, especially cooling systems, electrical components, brakes, and engines running air conditioning for long periods. Vehicle fires are more common during the summer, making routine maintenance and attention to warning signs like smoke, odors, or dashboard alerts especially important. If your vehicle catches fire, move to a safe location, stay clear of the smoke and flames, and call 911.

Today’s incidents also highlighted the importance of strong mutual aid partnerships during simultaneous emergencies. Thank you to 18 Fire, 36 Rescue, and all responding volunteers who left work, family, and home to help protect our community.

Great BBQs Don’t End With Fire Trucks

As summer kicks off and families head to the shore, parks, and Hunterdon County’s lakes, Annandale Hose Company would like to share a friendly reminder about BBQ and grilling safety.

There’s nothing better than enjoying good food outdoors with family and friends, but please remember to grill responsibly. Keep grills attended, away from anything that can burn, and use caution with hot charcoal and ashes.

One issue we see every summer is hot coals being dumped into park dumpsters before they are fully cooled. It only takes one hot coal to start a dumpster fire, creating unnecessary hazards and pulling emergency crews away from other important calls.

Unfortunately, we’ve already responded to a few park-related fires this season, so please plan ahead and make sure coals are fully extinguished before throwing them away.

Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the summer!

Two Departments. One Mission. Big Water From a Small Creek.

Last evening, members of Annandale Hose Company (46) and Lebanon Borough Fire Company (18) came together for a joint cross-training exercise focused on low rural water supply operations.

Using a shallow creek running parallel to Route 22 West, crews simulated a high-stakes incident requiring sustained large-volume water delivery in an area without hydrants. Members constructed a temporary dam system to maximize drafting capabilities, successfully supplying continuous hand-line fire attack evolutions, two aerial ladder master streams, and a ground blitzfire monitor high-capacity water flow.

Training like this strengthens more than operational capability, it builds teamwork, camaraderie, and the working relationships that are critical during real emergencies when mutual aid departments depend on one another.

A special thank you to Sunken Silo and Metro Seafood at the corner of Cokesbury Road and Route 22 West for allowing us to utilize your parking lot and access the creek for this important training opportunity.

And of course, thank you to Kona Ice for helping crews cool down afterward with some much-appreciated flavored ice on a warm evening.

Strong partnerships, realistic training, outside of the box logistical strategies, and shared experience help keep our communities protected.

Annandale Hose Company was proud to support North Hunterdon Youth Baseball this evening, 5/27/2026, with a “wet down” event at Foran Field, helping local players cool off after a warm evening on the field. 🚒⚾️

Events like this are a great reminder that the fire service is about more than emergency response. It is about community, service, and building positive relationships with the people we proudly serve every day. It was great getting the opportunity to spend some time with local families kicking off the summer, with more exciting events to come!

Thank you for having us out, and good luck to all of the athletes this season!

Initial reports came in as a fuel tanker fire on Route 31, bringing a strong response from Annandale Hose Company overnight. Fortunately, the incident was determined to be an overheated mechanical issue that required active cooling operations underneath the fuel tank to reduce temperatures and ensure the scene remained safe.

Not every call turns into a major incident, but every response is treated seriously from the start. Calls involving fuel tankers and hazardous materials require preparation, coordination, and a safety-first mindset. Our members continue to train and respond as if every incident has the potential to escalate, because that preparation matters when seconds count.

Memorial Day 2026

As Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, the members of Annandale Hose Company #1 would like to wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, and memorable holiday weekend with family and friends.

Most importantly, today we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to all military personnel, veterans, first responders, dispatchers, healthcare workers, and public safety professionals, and while the rainy weekend may put a damper on some plans, it certainly won’t dampen our appreciation for those who continue to serve our communities and nation each day, both locally and abroad.

Please celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day.

From all of us at Annandale Hose Company, thank you and have a safe holiday weekend!

Storm Response Across Hunterdon County

Late in the afternoon on 5/20, strong storms rolled through Hunterdon County bringing down trees and power lines, causing power outages, and generating multiple emergency incidents throughout Clinton Township and neighboring communities. Volunteers from Annandale Hose Company, along with our mutual aid partners, responded to numerous calls well into the early morning hours of 5/21/2026, helping support a safe recovery for our community.

As we transition from spring into summer weather patterns, now is a good time to stay prepared for severe weather that can develop with little notice. Keep extra batteries, flashlights, non-perishable food, and drinking water readily available for unexpected emergencies. If you encounter downed wires, do not approach them and call 911 immediately.

A special thank you to all public safety professionals throughout Hunterdon County, and the Department of Public Works, who worked together through the night to help keep our communities safe and restore normalcy after the storm.
