Long before the Marine Corps became the force we know today, they executed their very first amphibious raid on New Providence Island in the Bahamas. From navigating "prodigious thickets" to seizing British cannons right out from under the Governor's nose, Captain Samuel Nicholas and his men secured a massive victory for the Continental Army.

For George Washington's 294th birthday (celebrated on February 16 this year thanks to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1971), we feature several illustrations from the Reverend John Frederick Schroeder's two-volume "Life and Times of Washington." This lavishly illustrated work by Schroeder captures the Revolution's turning points—from Washington’s first meeting with Alexander Hamilton to his legendary bravery at Princeton and Valley Forge. It's a beautiful glimpse into history through 19th-century artistry.
