***D30 Club Meeting – Wednesday, June 17, 6:30 PM – Join us at our June general membership meeting to hear from special guests Dominik Prokop (Candidate for County Council District 6) and Darcy Scott (President, South County Democratic Club and Candidate for Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee). It’s a great opportunity to learn about their vision for our community and get energized ahead of Election Day – all are welcome.
D30 Democrats,
Summer is upon us, and with it comes a defining moment for our party and our country. This month, we will select the Democratic candidates who will carry our hopes into November’s elections, poised to deliver victory not just for District 30, but for Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and the nation. The choices we make in the June 23 primary matter immensely: it’s our chance to pick leaders with integrity, vision, and a commitment to government by and for the people. These candidates must be nothing less than dedicated public servants who will put their constituents and country above themselves.
My thoughts turn to the ideals that launched our nation nearly 250 years ago. Democracy has never been about power for the privileged few – it’s about empowering the many. As President Abraham Lincoln famously declared, our country is defined by the principle of “a government of the people, by the people, for the people” – and that principle endures only through our active participation. We are fortunate to be Democrats in this moment, free to debate openly and vote our conscience as our democracy implores us to do. We embrace the responsibility to choose with discernment, informed by the issues, remembering always that our government belongs to all of us – rich or poor, fifth-generation or newly naturalized – all of us.
It’s frustrating to watch the other party’s leaders losing their way. Too many Republicans seem imprisoned by an ideology of conceit and myopia, consumed with themselves and loyalty to one man, rather than offering real solutions for all Americans. Instead of policies that help working families and our collective welfare, they double down on divisive rhetoric and personal power. But our party – and our club – stands for a bigger, bolder vision. We know our government and our nation is strongest when we include everyone’s voice and uphold the founding promise that power flows from the people, not just to the powerful or well-connected.
To fulfill that promise, the candidates we choose this month must be, above all, servants of the people. They should measure success by how well they serve all their constituents – whether Black or white, native-born or immigrant, wealthy or struggling – because, as President Theodore Roosevelt warned over a century ago, “This country will not be a good place for any of us to live in if it is not a reasonably good place for all of us to live in.” When our elected officials truly work on behalf of everyone, we all thrive.
Thankfully, we Democrats remain a party oriented toward our collective welfare, and our primary voters can hold our candidates accountable to our shared values. We saw a great example of that just last month when all four Democrats running for County Executive – James Kitchin, Kyle Nembhard, Allison Pickard, and Pete Smith – came together at our May 20 forum to share their visions with voters. We thank them for engaging with our community and demonstrating that our party thrives on open, respectful debate. The late Congressman John Lewis reminded us, “Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part.” It is our turn. Let’s do our part this June by researching the candidates, asking tough questions, and voting for those who have the humility and courage to put people first. With engaged citizens making careful decisions about our representatives, I have every confidence we will nominate candidates ready to deliver a great victory for the people this November – and begin to steer our country back toward its highest ideals of democracy and justice for all.
As always, our club offers many ways to stay involved. Come connect with your fellow Democrats at the “Almost 7:30” weekly breakfasts with an outstanding lineup of guest speakers throughout June and into July, and be sure to join us for our monthly membership meeting on June 17 (with Dominik Prokop and Darcy Scott as guests) just ahead of the primary. We also have some special events on the horizon – Delegate Dana Jones’ 50th Birthday Bash and our D30 Summer Luau – check out the Upcoming Events calendar below and mark your own calendars. And of course, encourage your neighbors and friends to vote in the primary and join our club. Bringing new voices into our movement will strengthen our democracy one conversation at a time.
This month, let’s choose the Democrat who you believe is most capable of leading as a servant of the people – for that is what our representatives must be above all.
Respectfully,
Wesley Huey
President, Speaker Michael E. Busch D30 Democratic Club

Membership Renewal and Engagement
If you’re ready to heed the call and be a “Do-Something Democrat,” we welcome you! Annual dues are $40 per person (with an optional $20 booster for a total of $60, if you’re able). Every dollar goes directly toward the tools and events that help us elect Democrats up and down the ballot – from meeting space and community outreach to voter contact and digital organizing. Not sure if your membership is current? Email our Treasurer, Helen Chin ([email protected]) and she’ll be glad to assist. And don’t forget to invite a friend or neighbor to join us! We started the year with 152 members, and our goal is to grow to 175 by December – we can reach that with your help. Working together by volunteering, voting, and shattering the silence, we will build a stronger community here in District 30 and help deliver good governance for all our neighbors.
