This Preservation Month, we’re reflecting on the people who helped protect the historic character of Annapolis, including one of Historic Annapolis’s founders, Anne St. Clair Wright.

In 1952, St. Clair Wright joined a small group of concerned citizens to form Historic Annapolis in response to threats facing the city’s historic buildings and character. Her decades of volunteer leadership helped preserve the Annapolis we know and love today, from downtown streetscapes to treasured landmarks like the William Paca House & Garden.

Her work reminds us that preservation does not happen by accident. It happens because people choose to protect what matters.

Now, we invite you to help carry that legacy forward.

Through May 31, every gift to Historic Annapolis will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000.

Yes, don't miss the Maryland Flying Camp along Pinkney Street this Saturday, May 30! There will be living historians in Revolutionary-era clothing, demonstrations, games, and other hands-on activities for all ages. Come see how Marylanders lived, worked, and served in 1776!

Did you know that Marylanders organized a rapid-response militia to defend liberty during the early days of the American Revolution?

When the Call Came: Civilians and the Maryland Flying Camp
May 30 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
https://www.annapolis.org/event/livinghistory-marylandflyingcamp/

Known as the Maryland Flying Camp, this force was more than a military unit; it was a civilian experience that transformed daily life in 1776. *** Stop by Pinkney Street on Saturday to meet living historians and experience how Marylanders lived, worked, and served during a pivotal moment in the fight for independence. The war was fought not only on battlefields, but in homes, shops, taverns, and fields! Visitors of all ages can take part in period games and a hands-on activity from the Revolutionary era.

This is a drop-in style program. Visitors may join at any time during program hours and explore at their own pace through informal interaction and demonstrations. Advance registration recommended, but not required. Cost: Free ($5 suggested donation)

194 Green Street was built in 1871. Originally a rental property connected to 99 Main Street next door, it became a private residence by 1903. Since then, it has served many purposes, including as a barbershop, cigar shop, confectionary, and served as the HOBO flagship store for many years. The purple marker denotes the building's characteristics that are distinctive of Victorian and Second Empire Architecture: its mansard roof and elaborate cornice.

Brice House discovery THROWBACK!
Who needs a pantry when you have underground storage?!

What we thought would be straight forward - because the kitchen has been dug before and the ground disturbed by previous generations of mechanical equipment - was actually made curious with the discovery of a possible root cellar. This was uncovered in the middle of the kitchen just in front of the fireplace hearth, and would have been used to store winter vegetables under a trap door. 🍆🍠🧅
