We Stand with Delegate Wu:

The Maryland Legislative LGBTQ+ Caucus unequivocally condemns the racist, anti-Asian rhetoric attacking Delegate Wu. I have had the privilege of serving with Delegate Wu on 2 different committees over 4 years and know him to be a smart contributor, a wonderful colleague, and a data-driven policymaker that keeps the best interests of Maryland families at the core of his work.

The LGBTQ+ Caucus is committed to building a Maryland where everyone is valued and nobody is discarded or disparaged. As policy makers and community leaders, we are best positioned when we focus on lifting up Marylanders, not attacking anyone because of their race or national origin. I am proud to stand with Delegate Wu and the AAPI Caucus and I call on all of our colleagues to do the same.

- Delegate Kris Fair, Chair, LGBTQ+ Caucus

ICYMI: Caucus Chair Del. Kris Fair ( Delegate Kris Fair ) spoke at a joint press conference highlighting each Caucus' legislative priorities. He uplifted 2 bills that still need to cross the finish line: the Birth Certificate Modernization Act (sponsored by Delegate Ashanti Martinez and Clarence Lam), and a bill to respond to the Supreme Court's latest ruling on conversion therapy bans (sponsored by Delegate Bonnie Cullison and Sen. Cheryl C. Kagan ) . There's still time to get involved - you can find information about how to contact your legislators about these bills on the Maryland General Assembly website.

Listen to his full comments below and watch the whole press conference on your you tube channel.

Sen. Cheryl C. Kagan is the sponsor of the Senate bill addressing the most recent Supreme Court case on conversion therapy. She has a few words to share about where the bill is at, what the ruling said, and what we can do next. Thank you, Senator, and Delegate Bonnie Cullison for sponsoring this critical legislation!!

Today marks Trans Day of Visibility, established in 2009 by Rachel Crandall-Crocker as a positive celebration of inclusion, so that trans people had more than a Trans Day of Remembrance for all those who have been killed simply for being trans. And rightly so - trans people are more than tragic statistics or sensationalized rhetoric; they represent the best of who we are, and their courage to live authentically despite systemic hostility, misunderstanding, and erasure should inspire all cisgender folks to stand with them and work for a world where everyone can be who they are.

To all the loud and proud trailblazers, to all the quiet leaders, and to every trans person living life in between, we are thankful you are here and promise that we will never stop working in allyship for your rights, belonging, and visibility - especially in spaces like the legislature that are constantly ignoring your realities.

Trans people don't just deserve visibility - visibility without material support is simply a target on trans people's back, especially in this antagonistic cultural moment. What trans people deserve from their leaders and communities is true tangible support: housing, health care, good jobs, and material solidarity. So on this Transgender Day of Visibility, may we all commit to doing more than simply shining a spotlight on them and instead concrete actions to support them and provide them a seat at the table.

CROSSOVER UPDATE! Here's what passed from our priorities list (so far):

Birth Certificate Modernization Act (HB1589/SB0626)

Advancing Equal Education Opportunities for All Students in Maryland bill (HB0649)

County Boards of Education - Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation - Information Collection and Reporting Requirements bill (HB0014)

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP! The Conversion Therapy - Prohibition and Causes of Action bill (HB1209/SB0950) has unfortunately not made it out of the House or Senate. This bill is a response to the Supreme Court Chiles v. Salazar case, which threatens to overturn state protections against conversion therapy -- a move which would put LGBTQIA+ Marylanders danger. Anticipating this, Delegate Cullison and Senator Kagan's bill would establish procedures for legal recourse for victims of conversion therapy in Maryland, and would extend the statute of limitations for lawsuits about injuries resulting from conversion therapy.

If you would like to get involved with any of the bills listed above, please feel free to submit testimony through the MGA website and ensure that you're staying informed on both State and Federal updates regarding LGBTQIA+ issues.

HB 1209 / SB 950 is critical legislation to protect survivors of conversion therapy and give them a pathway towards addressing the harms they suffer as a result. With crossover on Monday March 23, we are working to make sure that these important bills will pass this year! Thank you to Bonnie Cullison and Senator Cheryl C. Kagan for your work to protect survivors.

PRIORITY BILLS SPOTLIGHT: Hate Bias Reporting Requirements in Schools, Delegate Linda Foley.

Here's a little bit about Delegate Foley's bill, HB14!

“In order to address hate in our schools more effectively, we must have the data to ensure proper resources are being deployed to fight specific forms of hate. While current state law requires school systems to have a hate-bias reporting form, the incident information is ultimately compiled in aggregate and sent to different entities as a percentage of total bullying and harassment incidents, rather than in raw numbers. HB14 fits in neatly and nicely into existing law and would simply cause school systems to disaggregate the information they have collected and report the raw numbers of hate-bias incidents broken down by targeted victim groups.”

Thank you for sponsoring this bill!
