The pileated woodpecker can be found in parts of the west, across southern Canada and across much of the eastern United States. These large woodpeckers are noted by their bold crests, black-and-white plumage and loud calls. They prefer mature forests where they excavate cavities in dead trees and forage for carpenter ants and woodboring beetle larvae.

The U.S. is home to the greatest total number of turtle species than any single nation! They play a vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and habitats. Law enforcement officials have reported an increase in the trafficking of native turtles, from the common Eastern box turtle to federally threatened bog turtle. Every turtle counts - removing even a single wild turtle can harm a local population. Since turtle eggs and hatchlings have a low survival rate, most adults must breed for their entire lives to replace themselves in the wild population. https://ow.ly/Ie0o50YUjRw

Rusty patched bumble bees, once an everyday sight , now occur only in scattered populations in several states. These endangered bumble bees need flowers for food from early spring through fall. We can all help by reducing or eliminating pesticide use and planting native plants. These are some plants favored by the rusty patched bumble bee:

Red knots are likely the world’s most cosmopolitan traveling shorebird. The rufa subspecies occurs along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts with some traveling almost 19,000 miles annually between their breeding grounds in the Arctic of Central Canada and wintering grounds as far away as Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America. Horseshoe crab eggs are the most important food for red knots during spring migration. Spawning horseshoe crabs gather on the beaches of Delaware and new Jersey during May where red knots gather to stop and refuel up for their final flight to the Arctic.
