We had a close call this week that could have created a fiery situation without the swift actions of our curbside collectors.

This week, one of our curbside trash trucks unknowingly collected trash materials from a home that included a milk jug of gasoline hidden in a trash bag. Flammable liquids can be incredibly dangerous when mixed with curbside materials, and can create fires in seconds.
Thanks to the quick thinking of our curbside collection crews, the hazardous material was identified before a disaster occurred.

These items should NEVER be placed at the curb for curbside trash, recycling, OR yard waste collection:
-Gasoline or other fuels
-Rechargeable batteries
-Oil-based paints
-Chemicals, poisons, or liquids
-Pool Chemicals
-Household and automotive cleaners

The hazardous items mentioned above are also NOT accepted at any County Recycling Center or the Millersville Landfill and Resource Recovery Facility.
Anne Arundel County residents can visit a household hazardous waste drop-off event to safely dispose of flammable and other hazardous materials. Check out the link in the comments for the list of 2026 events, and the complete list of accepted items.

Help keep our community and curbside collection crews safe by only placing accepted items at the curb.

Mark your calendars, Anne Arundel County Residents, and begin preparing for the Spring Paper Shred Event on April 11, 2026.
Anne Arundel County residents are able to drop off up to 4 boxes or rigid containers of personal documents (no bags, please!) per vehicle to be safely shredded on site by a secure service, so there is no need to pre-shred your paper!
Plus, all shredded paper is 100% recycled after the event!

The outdoor shredding event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., at the Heritage Office Complex, 2662 Riva Road, Annapolis, MD 21401. Please note that the date and time frame are subject to change.

Please be aware that we cannot accept these items to be shredded: pieces of cardboard, plastics, binders, common trash, hazardous materials, CDs, DVDs, magnetic media, X-Rays, computers, accessories, pre-shredded paper, or non-confidential papers at the spring paper shred event.
