BREAKING: PATHETIC! Trump files another DESPERATE last-minute appeal to keep his name on the Kennedy Center — claiming donors only gave money because his name is on the building.
The scaffolding is UP. The deadline has ARRIVED. And Donald Trump is fighting like hell to keep his 18 illegal letters on the front of America's memorial to John F. Kennedy.
After federal Judge Christopher Cooper REFUSED Friday to pause his own order requiring Trump's name to come off the Kennedy Center by the end of the day, the Justice Department filed a desperate emergency motion with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals — begging for a stay by 7 p.m.
Their argument? You CANNOT make this up.
"Without the name 'Trump' on the Building, our fundraising will not only come to a halt, but any and all monies raised or committed would be obligated to be returned, refunded, or terminated," the government wrote.
Read that again. The Justice Department of the United States argued IN COURT that donors only gave money to the Kennedy Center because Trump's name is on it. That's not a defense — that's a CONFESSION. The donations were never about the arts. They were tribute payments to a man's ego.
The filing even echoed Trump's personal grievances, whining that the building is in "bad shape" and "unsightly to look at," but promising it "will be the envy of the World, something that everyone, including this court, will be proud of."
Judge Cooper wasn't buying ANY of it when he denied Trump’s initial appeal. In denying the stay, he noted the administration hasn't "made a strong showing" they'd win on appeal — and pointed out the Kennedy Center ALREADY complied with much of his order, scrubbing Trump's name from its website and internal documents. "These efforts undermine the notion that defendants face irreparable harm," he wrote.
Remember how we got here: Trump gutted the Kennedy Center board, installed loyalists, had them vote to rebrand it the "Trump-Kennedy Center," and planned to CLOSE the institution for two years. Judge Cooper ruled in May that ONLY CONGRESS can rename it.
Meanwhile, crowds gathered outside on Friday, chanting "TAKE IT DOWN." Neighbors at the Watergate have champagne on ice. Volunteer groups are livestreaming the facade 24/7, waiting for the moment those letters come off. But as of 6 PM EDT on Friday, the Trump name remained on the building.
One 79-year-old onlooker who once met JFK himself called Trump's name on the building a "desecration."
He's RIGHT. Take it down. NOW!
