Relay: How it began and what we do

Relay For Life began in the USA in May 1985 when colorectal surgeon, Dr. Gordy Klatt, wanted to raise awareness of cancer and boost the income of his local cancer charity. He spent a gruelling twenty-four hours circulating a track in Tacoma, Washington, and raised over $27,000, and showed that one person really can make a difference.

Since then, Relay For Life has become the largest fundraising event for cancer in the world. Celebrated by more than 4 million people in over 20 countries, this inspirational overnight event empowers and unites local communities to fight cancer.

At a Relay fundraising event, team members take turns walking around a track or designated path. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don't stop because they're tired, and for one night, neither do we.

This past month has been a traditional March, living up to the saying of "entering like a lamb, and leaving like a lion." While you're staying out of the wind, pick up the latest edition of The Graphic-Advocate. The front page features the latest from the South Central Calhoun CSD Board of Directors, who took in a mock meeting from the SCC FFA Conduct of Meetings team. We also feature the passing of former Rockwell City native Charles G. Boyd, the only Vietnam War veteran to attain the four-stars of General within the United States Air Force. What is an edition of The Graphic-Advocate without a good batch of pictures, as we show off our favorite photos from SCC Fine Arts’ latest stage production, "Robin Hood." Inside, you'll find updates from Relay for Life of Calhoun County, the Lake City council, the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors, South Central Calhoun Bands, Titan sports and much, much more. Our website, www.thegraphic-advocate.com, has also been updated. Pick up your copy today at our newsstand, located at 121 N. Center Street in Lake City, or at participating Casey's or Sparky's, at the Rockwell City Country Store, at the Lake City Food Center or at Lake City Hardware & Gifts. For our subscribers, it's on its way to a mailbox near you. To subscribe and "get in the know," either give us a call at (712) 464-3188 or visit us online today!
