The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office spent the afternoon connecting with families at the Calhoun County Blue Line Foundation’s Touch‑A‑Truck event. It was great seeing so many smiling faces and watching the kiddoes light up as they explored the vehicles — and a few of the adults were just as pumped.

We appreciate every family who stopped by and the Blue Line Foundation for hosting an event that brings our community together.

Each year on September 11, the Coca‑Cola Company shows its appreciation for first responders across the nation by giving back in a meaningful way. Today, their team stopped by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office with 10 cases of Powerade to help keep our deputies hydrated and ready to serve.

We’re grateful for this thoughtful gesture and for Coca‑Cola’s continued commitment to supporting the men and women who protect our community.

Today, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the families whose lives were forever changed. We honor the first responders who ran toward danger, the survivors who carry the weight of that day, and the communities across our nation who continue to stand together in its memory. Twenty‑five years later, we remain committed to compassion, service and unity.

Update 12:40 AM

The power has been restored and the traffic light controlling the intersection is functioning properly. Traffic routes are open to normal traffic.

The traffic signal at the intersection of Alabama Highway 77 and Alabama Highway 144 remains inoperable. Unfortunately, motorists are not consistently treating the intersection as a four-way stop, creating a significant safety hazard for both the traveling public and the crews working in the area.
After evaluating the situation, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the Ohatchee Police Department have determined that additional road closures and detours are necessary to safely control traffic through the area.
Effective immediately:
• Westbound AL-144 traffic will be closed and detoured near Jack’s restaurant.
• Eastbound AL-144 traffic approaching AL-77 will be closed, and motorists will be required to turn southbound onto AL-77.
• Motorists needing to travel northbound on AL-77 will need to proceed south to a safe location where they can turn around and then travel north.
• Motorists needing to continue eastbound on AL-144 should use Harts Ferry Road as an alternate route.

We understand these closures and detours are an inconvenience. However, the safety of motorists and the crews working in this area must remain our highest priority. Due to the unsafe driving conditions being observed at the intersection, these measures are necessary until the traffic signal can be safely restored.

⚠️ REPAIR UPDATE: The estimated repair time provided in our earlier announcement has been extended. Due to the extent of the damage, we have not received a new estimated time for completion. The Ohatchee Police Department will provide additional information as soon as an updated repair timeline becomes available.

Please slow down, remain alert, follow all detour signs and officer directions, and allow additional travel time when traveling through this area. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as we work to keep motorists and repair crews safe.

From CPR and basic first aid to drug identification, our team continues to put in the work to keep inmates safe and support the wellbeing of everyone inside our facilities.

Their commitment to ongoing training reflects the professionalism and care they bring to their roles. We’re grateful for the officers who show up, stay prepared, and help maintain a safe environment for Calhoun County.

We are aware of the various "Cat in the Hat" social media posts that are intended to cause fear in schools across the country. Our SROs and detectives report each incident and investigate them thoroughly.

While some kids may think it is a funny social media trend, be aware that it could easily land them in trouble; both with the school and potentially with the law. At this time, we are treating each post referring to our schools as very serious, but do not believe that there is any credible cause for concern.
