Two generations. One oath.

Today in Gettysburg, Katherine Zito (42) and her son, Matthew Zito (19), stood side-by-side and enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Katherine will serve as a 35N Signals Intelligence Analyst, while Matthew begins his Army career as a 15T UH-60 Helicopter Repairer.

It's not every day that a mother and son start their Army careers together, but their story highlights something important: there is no single path to service. Whether you're just starting out or looking for a new challenge later in life, the Pennsylvania Army National Guard offers opportunities to serve, develop new skills, and be part of something bigger than yourself.

With the Army National Guard's expanded age eligibility, more Pennsylvanians than ever may qualify to serve.

Congratulations to Katherine and Matthew, and welcome to the team.

On April 11, Soldiers from across the Pennsylvania Army National Guard took on the Norwegian Foot March 🇳🇴 led by 1SG Marcos Figueroa—an 18.6-mile ruck march with a purpose.

Participants completed the full distance while carrying rucks packed with non-perishable food, turning every mile into support for the Norristown community. In total, OVER 1,000 POUNDS of food were donated to the local food bank.

Soldiers who met the standard earned the Norwegian Foot March Badge, recognizing their endurance and achievement.

Special thanks to our supporting agencies for helping ensure a safe and successful event:

SPC Shollenberger joined the Pennsylvania Army National Guard in December 2021. He joined the Guard because it presented a great opportunity for him to build character and establish a foundation for his future while simultaneously paying for college. On the civilian side, he is a division II swimmer, currently enrolled in nursing school, and works as a PCT in the emergency department at UPMC Hamot. SPC Shollenberger holds the distinction of being one of the most senior specialist medics in the EVAC Platoon, boasting extensive field training. Additionally, he has achieved remarkable success, securing the second position on the Soldiers of the Year board.
