Perry is the epitome of a volunteer. He was the fire chief for many years and is still an integral part of the department.
A Heart for Anson ❤️
Today, on National Volunteer Recognition Day, I want to take a moment to honor someone who has gone above and beyond for our community for many, many years—Perry Thompson.
Over the past eight years working with the Chamber, there’s been one person I’ve consistently been able to count on when I need help—Perry.
When it’s time to light up our courthouse for Christmas, I don’t have to wonder where to start—I call Perry. He tells me how many bulbs to order, where to get them, and then he takes it from there. He loads, hauls, coordinates volunteers, checks electrical, and makes sure everything is ready to go. And without fail, when something malfunctions (because there’s always something), he’s back up there—night after night if needed—making sure every single light shines the way it should.
And it doesn’t stop there.
Parade questions? Last-minute needs? Community events? Chamber banquet coordination? Making sure our firefighters are represented and honored? Recommending people who deserve recognition?
I call Perry—and he shows up.
But what I’ve experienced over these years is only a small glimpse of what he has given to this community over a lifetime.
Perry has spent decades serving as a volunteer firefighter—answering calls at all hours, showing up in moments most of us hope we never have to face, and putting himself in harm’s way to protect lives, homes, land, and livelihoods. That kind of service doesn’t just take time—it takes heart, courage, and an unwavering commitment to others.
His impact on this community goes far beyond any one role or event—it’s woven into years of service, sacrifice, and showing up whenever he’s needed.
And behind that kind of dedication is a strong foundation. His wife, Cathy, has clearly been a part of that support system through the years. Her generosity and willingness to give—whether through supporting efforts behind the scenes or contributing to community events—reflect that same spirit of caring for others.
Perry isn’t just someone who volunteers.
He is someone who lives to serve his community.
And I can say with complete sincerity—Anson is better because of him.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Perry. For every call you’ve answered, every life you’ve impacted, every problem you’ve solved, every late night, and every act of kindness you’ve given without hesitation.
You are truly appreciated—more than words can ever express.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
