🥎✨ ONE OF ANSON’S FAVORITE NIGHTS IS BACK ✨🥎

There’s just something special about this time of year… lawn chairs lined up, kids running and laughing, friends catching up, and the whole community gathered around the ball field. ❤️

The 6th Annual Jones County Softball Tournament is coming up May 6–8 at the Anson Bluebonnet Softball Facility, and it’s one of those events we all look forward to year after year.

Yes—you’ll see some friendly competition out on the field between teams from around our community (hosted by Bluebonnet Detention Center), but what really makes this event so great is everything happening around it.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Families spread out on blankets and lawn chairs
⚾ Kids playing, laughing, and making memories
🤝 Neighbors visiting like no time has passed
🎉 A relaxed, fun, come-and-go atmosphere for everyone

And of course… 🍽️ THE FOOD 🍽️
The concession stand will be serving up delicious meals like brisket nachos, chopped brisket sandwiches, and loaded brisket baked potatoes—meals that include chips and a drink. You’ll also find hot dogs, nachos, pickles, chips, and plenty of cold drinks, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy while you kick back and take in the games. 😄 😄

This is one of those simple, good nights in Anson that reminds you why we love our town so much. Easy, fun, welcoming, and full of familiar faces.

Bring your kids, bring your friends, and come enjoy a great evening at the ballpark. 💙

Perry is the epitome of a volunteer. He was the fire chief for many years and is still an integral part of the department.

A Heart for Anson ❤️

Today, on National Volunteer Recognition Day, I want to take a moment to honor someone who has gone above and beyond for our community for many, many years—Perry Thompson.

Over the past eight years working with the Chamber, there’s been one person I’ve consistently been able to count on when I need help—Perry.

When it’s time to light up our courthouse for Christmas, I don’t have to wonder where to start—I call Perry. He tells me how many bulbs to order, where to get them, and then he takes it from there. He loads, hauls, coordinates volunteers, checks electrical, and makes sure everything is ready to go. And without fail, when something malfunctions (because there’s always something), he’s back up there—night after night if needed—making sure every single light shines the way it should.

And it doesn’t stop there.

Parade questions? Last-minute needs? Community events? Chamber banquet coordination? Making sure our firefighters are represented and honored? Recommending people who deserve recognition?

I call Perry—and he shows up.

But what I’ve experienced over these years is only a small glimpse of what he has given to this community over a lifetime.

Perry has spent decades serving as a volunteer firefighter—answering calls at all hours, showing up in moments most of us hope we never have to face, and putting himself in harm’s way to protect lives, homes, land, and livelihoods. That kind of service doesn’t just take time—it takes heart, courage, and an unwavering commitment to others.

His impact on this community goes far beyond any one role or event—it’s woven into years of service, sacrifice, and showing up whenever he’s needed.

And behind that kind of dedication is a strong foundation. His wife, Cathy, has clearly been a part of that support system through the years. Her generosity and willingness to give—whether through supporting efforts behind the scenes or contributing to community events—reflect that same spirit of caring for others.

Perry isn’t just someone who volunteers.

He is someone who lives to serve his community.

And I can say with complete sincerity—Anson is better because of him.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Perry. For every call you’ve answered, every life you’ve impacted, every problem you’ve solved, every late night, and every act of kindness you’ve given without hesitation.

You are truly appreciated—more than words can ever express.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

During our last meeting night, the department conducted extraction training utilizing the newly acquired tools procured through the Fire and Rescue Equipment grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service. A seasoned instructor with over 20 years of experience led the training, discussing various methods and showcasing the new tools. In emergency situations, every minute counts, and the lives of those in need depend on our proficiency and speed. The new tools are expected to significantly reduce response times, as they eliminate the need for hydraulic hoses and pumps. With a charged battery, our team can be operational in seconds, thereby enhancing our extraction capabilities. This training session provided valuable repetition for our firefighters, ultimately improving their knowledge and skills in extraction techniques. When lives are on the line, we train to be ready! Shoutout to Hamby VFD for sending some firefighters out to train alongside us.

On Friday, March 13th, several members of the Anson Volunteer Fire Department had the opportunity to visit the elementary school and spend some time with the students talking about the exciting opportunities in the fire service—especially the unique role of volunteer firefighters.

Our firefighters shared what it means to serve the community, the teamwork involved in responding to emergencies, and how volunteer departments make a real difference in towns like ours. It was a great chance to answer questions, talk about fire safety, and hopefully inspire the next generation of community servants.

Thank you to the school staff and students for welcoming us. We always appreciate the opportunity to connect with our community and share a little about what we do.

The Anson Fire Department held its annual Fire Banquet this evening — a time set aside each year to bring our firefighters together with their families for a well-deserved evening of fellowship and appreciation.

This event is more than just a dinner. It’s an opportunity to recognize the commitment, sacrifice, and teamwork that define our department — and to acknowledge the families who support our members day in and day out.

A highlight of the evening was the presentation of our Firefighter of the Year award. Congratulations to this year’s recipient, Andy Spurgin. This recognition reflects his dedication, professionalism, and service to our department and community.

To all of our firefighters and families — thank you. Your continued support, commitment, and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. We are proud to serve alongside you.

We ask everyone to use extreme caution if burning, and consider postponing outdoor burning altogether. Your cooperation helps keep our community and first responders safe.

Thank you for doing your part.

Burn Ban has been lifted.
Please call 325 823 4604, 325 823 4605 to report control burns.
