Saturday Spotlight
May ~ Post 5
Well, it’s the last Saturday of the month so I am spotlighting my non-fiction book I am reading. Guys, let me tell you. I was so blessed in high school. I entered high school at the best time ever. As a freshman we were required to take English 101 in South Dakota. But, after that the next 6 semesters we could take whatever we wanted to take. I loved to read even back then and absolutely loved creative writing and still do but my favorite to read and write was and still is poetry.
“In the Clearing” by Robert Frost was copyright in 1959. It is only about 100 pages and some of the pages only had a couple lines of poetry on them. I can’t say if I prefer Shel Silverstein or Alfred Tennyson, or Robert Frost. One thing I can honestly say is, “Not one poem, made me want to read it again and again like, “The Lady of Shalott” by Tennyson”. In high school I read that poem every day religiously! When I first watched “Anne of Green Gables”, Anne Shirley was reading that poem. I think that is why I liked that movie so much. That is one show I could watch again and again. I have read the book several times as well. Ok, I am obsessed with poetry. My favorite types of poetry are limericks or haiku. Most of the poems in this book were not those types.
The Hamann Memorial Library has several books on poetry. Why don’t you stop in and browse our poetry section.

Saturday Spotlight
May ~ Post 4
This week I am spotlighting the first book in the Mitford series by Jan Karon. “At Home in Mitford” was/is a great book! I am so excited to have found this series in our library. I loved this book. Jan Karon is my type of author. I am going to be honest. When I first decided to read this book I thought it was going to be too long. Granted it is a large print book so naturally there will be more pages. But, I thought, oh Darla, can you read over 800 pages in a week? No! I timed myself on one page and it was right at one minute. Oh brother, I thought, a book that will take over 800 minutes. I barely have 60 minutes a day to spare on free reading, maybe, 90 minutes but not over 2 hours a day. That is not going to happen! Ok, so take two weeks. I pride myself in reading a book a week. Pride goes before the fall the Good Book says. Put away your pride and enjoy the book.
Please join with me in reading the Mitford series. I had no idea it was set in a fictional town of North Carolina until Lake Lure was mentioned. Oh my goodness! What a lovely lake! When we lived in North Carolina it was 7 hours away from us but it was a lot like going to the Black Hills. I felt I needed to go at least 1 time a year. Also, I have told you before, put a dog in the story and I am all in! Another thing I loved was this book had titles for the chapters and the name of the first chapter is Barnabas. Barnabas is a dog! I am going to get comfy for this book. Unfortunately, Barnabas was stolen. Father Tim is the main character of this series and Jan Karon has a way of drawing you in with his work ethics. However, with this being said, there is the problem in this story. Read “At Home in Mitford”. It is much like a real town. Some of the people you will come to love and others will drive you crazy! Also, find out if Barnabas is returned or not. Again, I am so happy I found this series in the Hamann Memorial Library. Come on it and start reading it for yourself.
