As many of you may have seen, we have winter weather coming in the the next couple of days. Our Deputies will continue to perform their duties thoughout this winter event.

We ask each of you to me mindful and use caution if you feel it necessary to travel during this time. Travel is not recommended. We will always respond to a call for service, but our response may be limited.

We will not be able to pull vehicles out if stuck. If you are stuck, we may not be able to get to you without getting stuck ourselves.

If you find yourself in need of help, always call and we will do what we can.

Undersheriff Kenny Hodson

For Immediate Release:

New Year’s campaign stresses the importance of driving sober

New Year’s Eve is one of the deadliest days of the year for drunk driving.

The Harper County Sheriff's Office joins law enforcement across the state to provide education about the importance of driving sober. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the statewide Taking Down DUI campaign, which runs Dec. 26-Jan. 2.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day about 34 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 42 minutes. These deaths were all preventable.

If you’re drinking, don’t drive. Being a responsible driver is simple:
• Plan a safe ride home before the party. If you drink, don’t drive, call a ride-share, taxi or a sober friend.
• If someone has been drinking, take their keys and arrange a sober ride home.
• If you see an impaired driver, contact local law enforcement.

For more information on impaired driving, go to www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov/safety-topics/drunk-driving.

Yesterday the Harper County Sheriff’s Office presented Chaparral High School Athletic Director Vance Williams and School Resource Officer Sergeant Craig Hadsall with Commendation Awards for their hard work and dedication to the students of our community. Vance and Craig have went above and beyond the call of duty to motivate the students of Chaparral High School to meet attendance goals and encourage them on a daily basis.

Drivers are advised that during the period of August 16 through Labor Day, September 1, The Harper County Sheriff’s Office will join other police agencies across Kansas in a crackdown aimed at removing impaired drivers from the roadways during You Drink. You Drive. You Lose.
In Kansas, preliminary 2024 data shows that 83 people died and more than 1,100 people were injured in crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver. It is illegal to drive while impaired, and just one drink before driving can put you and others in danger, because alcohol impairs thinking, reasoning and muscle coordination.
Driving after consuming alcohol or any other potentially impairing substance is a choice you make. You can make the responsible choice: plan to use a rideshare service, have a designated driver, or call a sober friend or family member to pick you up if you or your driver has been drinking. The You Drink. You Drive. You Lose enforcement campaign is intended to remind drivers to take a moment to consider how it would be to begin every day with the memory of your decision if it resulted in injury or death. If you are driving impaired, you are not only more likely to crash, but that crash is much more likely to cause serious injury or death. Think about your family, your friends, your coworkers, and neighbors.
And always wear your seat belt, it’s your best defense against impaired drivers. Every trip, every time.
