When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray
table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never
charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails,
it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly. For more

Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools
outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These
batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they

🚒 Reporting for fire-safety duty! 👨‍🚒👩‍🚒 These little recruits are all geared up and ready to learn during Fire Prevention Week. 🧯🔥

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and we’re spreading the word with a little help from our collections! 🚒🔥 So much of our Fire Department Collection and City Beautiful Scrapbook Collection documents Fire Prevention efforts over the years, giving us plenty of historical reminders about the importance of fire safety.

This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety. Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep our homes and communities safer. 🔋🧯 (NFPA website).

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is
warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or
color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away
from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can

Soft Surface? Hard Pass. Never charge phones, laptops, or tablets on beds, couches, or pillows where heat can get trapped. Always charge your devices on hard, flat surfaces. 🔥

Fully Charged? Time to Unplug. Leaving devices plugged in long after they reach 100% can strain the battery. Unplug your electronics once they finish charging to keep your home safe. 🔋🚫

This Fire Prevention Week we joined with Nashville Department of Waste Services to highlight proper disposal of Lithium Ion Batteries. Our Assistant Fire Marshal Chanda Williams explains how to safely charge batteries and NWS shows where you can safely dispose of them when you need to get rid of those batteries.
