SCAM Alert: Apopka Planning & Zoning & Building Permits

The City of Apopka has been made aware of emails and requests for payments outside of our permitting process through OpenGov. These emails often include a sense of urgency for payment and details about a current application.

Tips to remember:
- The City of Apopka will never request payment outside of our official OpenGov permitting portal.
- Verify the email address. Official emails from the City of Apopka will only originate from email addresses ending in .net.
- Official permitting notification will come directly from [email protected].
- If an unknown individual claims to be from the City of Apopka, try to verify their identity directly using the phone number or email address published on the City's official website before taking any action.

Cybersecurity Tip: Phishing attacks use email or malicious websites to solicit personal information by posing as a trustworthy organization. Phishing attempts often include a suspicious sender’s address, generic greetings and signature, spoofed hyperlinks and websites, poor grammar and sentence structure, and a suspicious attachment.

Happy 144th Birthday, Apopka! Thank you to The Apopka Museum for hosting this wonderful event celebrating the City's 144th birthday. It was great to hear about our city's history and to see Mayor Jerry Demings present. Thank you to everyone who took part in the presentation, especially President Maribel Brinkle.

• Apopka City Commission Meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 1:30 PM.
• Apopka City Commission Tentative Budget Hearing on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 5:15 PM

Hello Apopka,

I want to address the recent letter sent to residents about the rate changes to our Water, Sewer, Reclaimed Water, and Garbage. After reviewing the City's rate studies by Raftelis (dated October 7th and 16th, 2025, and February 4th, 2026), past ordinances, financial reports, and the City Council meeting dated September 17th, 2025, it is clear that these increases did not happen overnight.

They are the result of years of delayed actions and insufficient planning from previous city leadership. Let me explain. As we know, the cost of these services has been rising for years (approx. 8%- 12% a year), but our rates were not matching and adjusting to our reality. Frankly, Apopka's utility rates are going up now because the City waited too long to act. We as residents deserve honesty; if small, steady adjustments had been made years ago, it would have prevented a big jump today.

Poor planning has now required an emergency on this new administration's part. I may not have all the answers, but I'm committed to honest communication, responsible planning, and stronger financial safeguards. I have shared in our commission meetings that we cannot continue doing the same thing and expect different results. I'm committed to moving our city forward.
