For many years we been have recognizing Florida’s Emancipation Day. It is in honor of the freedom of Florida former slaves.

Juneteenth was a day when an announcement reached Texas and misremembered as the end of slavery in the US. Many people were still encumbered in other states, including Delaware and Kentucky.

Knowing true history instead of lore is important. As Apopkans let’s remember Florida’s history.

A large number of Apopka’s ‘slaves’, including his children, were released on a night in 1863 by the edge of Rock Springs by William S Delk in opposition to supporting the Confederacy.

Today, May 20, 2026, is Florida Emancipation Day. On this day in 1865, Emancipation was proclaimed in Tallahassee, 11 days after the end of the Civil War and two years after the Emancipation Proclamation first issued by President Abraham Lincoln declared freedom for enslaved people in Southern states. Florida Emancipation Day commemorates a pivotal moment in the state’s history.

Constable Denson L Hudson was killed in the line of duty three months after the Apopka Police Department was formed. He was the first and only officer killed in the line of duty in the history of the department and the longest unsolved murder in Orange County, Florida.

A public memorial sign is at the intersection of Main Street and Forest Avenue just south of the location of the shooting. There is an internal memorial inside the police department lobby on 6th Street.

Say his name during this week to remember police officer memorial week.

What did Ahapopka look like in 1836?
Nothing but long leaf pines and live oaks. It was barren.
It straddled the reservation of the First Nations' Georgia and Alabama people called Seminoles and the Florida Territory County of Mosquito.

See the lake on the diagonal line going through the image. Detailed maps of two major cities in Florida at the time are included.

The reservation in this map was created from the 1823 Treaty of Moultrie Creek.

Florida was a US Territory from 1821-1845.
