Appleton Seed Library

Appleton Seed Library Appleton Seed Library is a community based seed library. We house a collection of open-pollinated and heirloom seeds that you can borrow-grow-share.

April 2016 // Our first community seed lending library opened at the Appleton Public Library. Our model is that you will be able to borrow seeds to grow food, learn to save seeds, and thus strengthen our local seed diversity. The idea is that people save and trade seeds with each other and the library provides the opportunity and education to make it happen. Collectively, we believe that the savin

g and sharing of seeds has become a lost art as the landscape changed from the intimate to the industrial. Historically, seeds were treated as sacred, a living trust passed down to us by our ancestors. Our aim is to revive the diversity of local seed, share skills and motivate new conversations of chance. By growing a plant from seed, eating its fruit and returning it back to seed, we become fully engaged in the rhythm of nature, grow more attuned to the world around us, and gain a deeper understanding of our own place in the web of life.

Doing some spring cleaning? We invite you to donate your new and gently used books, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray, and jigsaw puzzles for our next book sale that benefits library programs and services. 📚📦 You can drop off donations at the library during regular business hours.

We are not able to accept magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, VHS, or cassette tapes.

Thank you for your consideration, Friends!

What's the difference between an open-pollinated variety and a hybrid?

Open-pollinated varieties produce seed true to type if they are allowed to cross-pollinate only with other plants of the same variety. If they cross with other varieties of the same species, their seed will not come true.

Hybrid varieties are those produced from the crossing of two different in**ed lines. Seed saved from hybrid varieties will not breed true in the next generation.

We list whether a variety is open-pollinated or a hybrid at the beginning of each variety description.

Do you chit your potatoes? 💚🌱
While you can plant your potatoes directly in the ground after taking them out of storage, another technique is to place them in a light, cool area for several days before planting. This will cause the potato to quickly break dormancy and immediately begin producing dark green spouts and leaves. This process is called chitting. In short season areas this is a great way to jump-start the growth of your potatoes.
