Episode 162 of Appleton Engaged is LIVE! 🎙

In this episode of Appleton Engaged, we sit down with Allison Fiebig Vasquez and Liz Wollenberg, Co-Founders of The Monthlies Project. The conversation explores how this community-driven coalition formed over wine and popcorn to take on period poverty across Northeast Wisconsin, ensuring young menstruators have the essential products they need to stay in school, participate in extracurriculars, and maintain their human dignity.

Our guests share how they leverage existing community infrastructure, partnering with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, the Women's Fund, the United Way Diaper Bank, and local community foundations to distribute over 1.5 million period products across more than 175 partner organizations. We also discuss the direct link between product access and school absenteeism, bust common myths around assistance programs like WIC/FoodShare not covering period necessities, highlight unique donation needs like black leggings, and explore how open conversations break down long-standing stigmas.

✅About the Organization:
The Monthlies Project is an all-volunteer community coalition dedicated to ending period poverty and eliminating barriers for young menstruators across Northeast Wisconsin. Rather than operating as a standalone traditional nonprofit, the coalition collaborates with existing regional powerhouses to source, pack, and distribute pads, tampons, and period supplies free of charge to schools, libraries, and youth-serving organizations.

Driven by its core steering group, "The Regulars," and supported entirely through community donations, corporate drives, and philanthropic grants, The Monthlies Project champions health equity, educational access, and human dignity for every student.

A special joint meeting between the Appleton Board of Health and Safety and Licensing will take place Wednesday, August 26, 2026 at 7:00 AM in the council chambers, 6th floor of City Hall, 100 N Appleton Street, Appleton to discuss Resolution 8-R-26.

What does increased enforcement mean for how the City uses limited resources?💲

The increase in noise enforcement this year reflects several intentional changes in how the City responds to vehicular noise concerns. Changes to traffic patterns, K9 officer scheduling, internal education and expectations, updates to noise and towing ordinances, and grant-funded officer presence have all contributed to increased enforcement activity.


These changes allowed the City to respond to concerns identified by community members without investing in costly, invasive equipment dedicated solely to noise enforcement. Equipping officers with the tools and discretion to identify unlawful or intentionally disruptive behavior also helps focus enforcement on unsafe or willful violations.

At the same time, vehicular noise is only one of many factors residents identify as affecting their health and quality of life. In both the City’s Community Health Assessment and the Tri-County Community Health Improvement Plan, residents identified mental health, housing affordability, childcare access, food security, and social isolation among their top priorities.

These priorities provide important context for conversations about how limited public resources are allocated. The City will continue responding to vehicular noise concerns while also considering how resources can address the range of issues residents identify as important to their health, safety, and quality of life.

In this episode of Appleton Engaged, host Timber Smith sits down with Brittany Taylor Draper (Founder and Executive Director), Larissa Chandler (Director of Community Engagement), and Lenise Pitts (Board Secretary) of Caring Hearts Women and Children’s Home. The conversation explores how this newly formed nonprofit is stepping up to bridge the vital gap between short-term emergency shelters and permanent housing across the Fox Cities.

Our guests share their personal journeys and discuss their vision for trauma-informed, extended transitional living that allows mothers and children the time they truly need to heal and rebuild. We also dive into their ongoing monthly Woman-to-Woman Support Group, community partnerships providing respite and essentials, upcoming awareness and healing dinners, and the urgent need for community champions to help secure a dedicated brick-and-mortar home.

Caring Hearts Women and Children’s Home is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to serving women and their children throughout the Fox Cities and surrounding communities. Focused on breaking cycles of homelessness and trauma from domestic violence or recovery, the organization provides trauma-informed support, life skills education, community resource navigation, and transitional housing solutions.

By walking alongside families with empathy, compassion, and practical aid—including gas cards, rental deposit assistance, and essential supplies—Caring Hearts ensures that mothers and children have a safe, stable foundation to heal, thrive, and achieve long-term independence.
