What a special way to start the school year!

During our first all-school assembly of the year, Superintendent Greg Hartjes had the honor of presenting Kathy Munson, Johnston Grade 4 Teacher, with the Helen & Ade Dillon Award.

The Dillon Award recognizes an AASD staff member who encourages a balanced life for students, both in and out of the classroom. Kathy exemplifies this commitment through the care she shows for her students’ moral, mental, and physical development, helping them build the life skills they need to grow as learners, individuals, and citizens.

We’re so proud to celebrate Mrs. Munson and the positive impact she has on her students and the Johnston Elementary community.

Congratulations! 👏👏👏

This week we're shining a spotlight on our 5th grade teacher, Miss Herrera! 🎉

Principal Heu says, "This week, we want to celebrate Ally Herrera and the many ways she contributes to our school community.
What has stood out about Ally is her flexibility, collaboration, and willingness to embrace change. As we have worked through some challenges at the start of the school year, Ally has been a thoughtful thinking partner—willing to listen, share ideas, problem-solve, and help us find the best path forward for students.

Ally brings a positive and supportive spirit to her work and reminds us that sometimes the greatest impact comes from simply being willing to step in, work together, and be part of the solution.
Thank you, Ally, for your flexibility, positivity, and partnership. We appreciate all that you bring to our Johnston/HAIS school community!"💛

As we kick off a new school year, we are excited to continue our Staff of the Week recognition! Every week, we will celebrate one of our AMAZING staff here at Johnston/HAIS!

To start things off, we are recognizing our EL Teacher, Mrs. Schmidt! 🎉

Principal Heu says, "We’re shining the spotlight on Abby Schmidt, our EL teacher rockstar! 💫

Abby is the kind of educator who makes everyone around her better. She is an incredible leader, team player, student-centered educator, and all-around solid teacher who brings positivity, heart, and a true commitment to students to everything she does.
Whether she’s supporting students, collaborating with colleagues, jumping in to help a teammate, or leading by example, Abby consistently shows what it means to be all in for kids and for our team.❤️

We are incredibly lucky to have Abby on our Johnston/HAIS team. Thank you, Abby, for being someone we can always count on and for bringing your talent, kindness, and big heart to our school every day!

We appreciate you more than you know! 🌟"

🌟Exciting Improvements Are Coming to Our School Grounds! 🌟

We’re excited to continue investing in spaces that support the whole child—academically, physically, culturally, socially, and emotionally! 💙

🚶‍♀️ A New Walking Path!
Our walking path will create a safe, visible space right on school grounds where students can:
Participate in our FitN15 physical activity opportunities
Walk, run, and move during the school day
Support Physical Education instruction
Continue traditions like our Mustang Mile and other special activities
Use movement as part of mentoring or student regulation
Staff and students can participate in wellness activities without leaving school grounds

🏃‍♂️ Outdoor Activity Spaces!
We’re also adding concrete activity spaces near the playground that will provide new opportunities for Tops/Tuj lub (pronounced "tuh-LOO" sports, play, and learning.

🌏 Celebrating Culture Through Play!
One exciting opportunity will be introducing students to Tops/Tuj lub, or "spin top," a traditional Hmong game that can be incorporated into Physical Education and recess. As Two Schools, One Community, we want our learning environment to reflect and celebrate the cultures and experiences of the students and families we serve. Just as many sports and recreational activities originated from different countries, regions, and cultures, we believe our students should have opportunities to learn and experience activities that reflect their own cultural heritage as well. This is one small way we can incorporate culture into students' everyday learning and play.

These improvements are spaces for movement, learning, connection, culture, and belonging.

We’re proud to make these intentional investments in our students and look forward to seeing these spaces come to life! 💙✨

Here’s to creating more opportunities for our students to learn, move, play, and shine!🌟

🍎 Back-to-School Conferences Are by Appointment Only! 🍎
We are excited to welcome our Johnston Elementary School and Hmong American Immersion School (HAIS) families back for another amazing school year! ❤️💙💛

Instead of a traditional Open House, we will once again begin the school year with Back-to-School Parent-Teacher Conferences. These one-on-one meetings provide a wonderful opportunity for families and teachers to get to know one another, share important information about your child, answer questions, and begin building a strong home-school partnership before the first day of school.

📅 Back-to-School Conference Dates:
Wednesday, August 26
Thursday, August 27

📢 Important Scheduling Update:
Back-to-School Conferences are scheduled appointments only and are not an Open House. Drop-in visits will not be available.
🏫 Families will schedule their conference through the school office (920)852-5505.
📚 Teacher assignments will be available in Infinite Campus beginning Monday, August 17. Families can view their child's homeroom teacher in Infinite Campus. Call the school office to schedule your back-to-school conference appointment.
🎒 Please bring your student's school supplies with you to your Back-to-School Conference.

We believe strong home-school partnerships are the foundation of student success, and these beginning-of-the-year conferences are an important first step in building those relationships.

Thank you for your flexibility and partnership as we work to create a welcoming and organized experience for all of our families. We can't wait to welcome our Johnston and HAIS families back soon!

Our teachers are getting ready to welcome our students back for the 2026-2027 school year! One of the many ways they are doing that is by beginning a book study on Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov. We’re excited to learn, grow, and bring new strategies into the classrooms for an amazing school year! ✨
