Lynchburg Area Young Republicans (Official)

Lynchburg Area Young Republicans (Official) LAYR serves to support the principles of republicanism by engaging young persons ages 18-40 in Lynchburg and the surrounding localities

The Lynchburg Area Young Republicans is comprised of members from Lynchburg and the Counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, and Campbell. We are a part of The Young Republican Federation of Virginia, which is the largest statewide organization of Young Republicans. As an organization, we focus on spreading the Republican message of limited government, individual liberty, strong national defense,

and faith in traditional American values. Republican Creed:

We Believe...

That the free enterprise system is the most productive supplier of human needs and economic justice,

That all individuals are entitled to equal rights, justice, and opportunities and should assume their responsibilities as citizens in a free society,

That fiscal responsibility and budgetary restraints must be exercised at all levels of government,

That the Federal Government must preserve individual liberty by observing Constitutional limitations,

That peace is best preserved through a strong national defense,

That faith in God, as recognized by our Founding Fathers is essential to the moral fiber of the Nation.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

We, the executive board and membership of the Lynchburg Area Young Republicans (LAYR,) stand by our 2021 elections. We also stand by our decision to expel a member that violated LAYR’s ethical conduct.

We, the executive board and membership of the LAYR, choose to stand by the decision to adhere to our bylaws, elect our leaders, and govern ourselves according to Christian prudence, common sense, and right judgment.

The sanctions that the Young Republican Federation of Virginia placed upon this body we find to be absurd, unprecedented, and undermining to the mission of the Young Republicans.

Therefore, LAYR will not comply with the demands to recall our properly called election, or reinstate the duly expelled member, or apologize for following our bylaws. LAYR will abide by the wishes of our members, and the public statements we have made heretofore.

Please direct all questions to the LAYR executive board: [email protected]

Per the LAYR bylaws, a vote will be conducted at the annual meeting each year to determine if pineapple is an acceptable topping on pizza. This discussion always brings out a great debate among our members!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
At today’s annual meeting of the Lynchburg Area Young Republicans, the club membership was requested to vote on the ongoing membership status of member and former Chairman Isaiah Knight after charges were provided against Mr. Knight that suggested actions and behavior that goes against LAYR objectives and Republican collaboration in the Central Virginia region. A member of the club originally brought the request to examine Mr. Knight’s membership status to the Executive Board on January 12, 2021, upon which an investigation was conducted. The Executive Board spoke with a number of individuals relevant to the case at hand who have experienced the problems believed to have arisen from Mr. Knight and his actions and determined that a vote on Mr. Knight’s membership would be necessary. Mr. Knight was informed of the charges on Saturday, January 23 via certified mail per LAYR bylaw requirements, and a subsequent email with all the relevant evidence was provided to the membership later that same day.

By a unanimous vote of the members in attendance, which exceeds the required two-thirds vote outlined in the LAYR bylaws, Mr. Knight was expelled from the Lynchburg Area Young Republicans effective immediately. Although LAYR does not take pleasure in the expulsion of members, we respect the membership’s decision regarding such matters. As a club, we are looking ahead to the health and wellbeing of not only our club, but of all our GOP organizations in the region and state and are excited to continue to foster greater relationships with fellow Republicans in our communities. We are thankful that many of our elected officials in the region have maintained strong, conservative convictions and their policymaking has reflected such worldviews and we are more than willing to continue to support their work in our communities.

Thank you Congressman Ben Cline (VA-06) for standing with President Donald Trump.

“Attempts to impeach the President in his final 8 days in office will only further fuel the political divide among our citizens and will be detrimental to long-term efforts to unify our country. Both President Trump and President-Elect Biden have called for a peaceful transition of power, so I would urge Speaker Pelosi to reconsider pursuing Articles of Impeachment. Now is a time to get back to work addressing the issues most important to the American people,” Cline said.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Ben Cline (VA-06) released the below statement amid efforts by House Democrats to impeach President Trump. “Attempts to impeach the President in his final 8 days in office will only further fuel the political divide among our citizens and will be detrimental to long-term...

At today’s electronic meeting of the Young Republicans Federation of Virginia Executive Committee, it was proposed to once again conduct the YRFV Convention in Richmond. For those who may be unfamiliar, the Convention was also conducted in Richmond in both 2017 and 2019.

As an individual that prides myself on learning all the facts and researching any topic put before me, I will report that this could not be the case for today’s meeting. For whatever reason, I was not notified of the meeting occurring until around 12:45 pm EST today, approximately one hour and fifteen minutes before the meeting even began. I was assured that this was a mistake or technical error, however, this has been a problem since shortly after I assumed the Chairmanship of LAYR in 2020. YRFV has not sent me the required notification for any of the last three (3) meetings conducted in 2020, and I have only found out about them through my own research after the fact. While I am willing to concede that perhaps there was a technical error today, this pattern of behavior ultimately leaves me questioning the entire process. Because of all of this, I was only able to briefly skim the Convention proposal. I could not properly read the Rules Report or abstain from voting when the item was presented on the agenda.

During the discussion portion of the meeting regarding the convention location and details, I attempted to ask questions that would be beneficial to both the membership of LAYR as well as clubs across the state that continue to be disenfranchised and not considered in YRFV decision-making. I asked why Richmond was selected, even though convention participation has decreased dramatically over the past six years. I asked if the appointed Convention Committee had considered the western portion of the state and whether they believed having the Convention again in Richmond would see an increase in involvement of clubs from around the ENTIRE state. The answers I received were unfortunately incredibly insufficient, and it was very apparent that I would not be able to support this measure in any way.

In an effort to vote for the good of our club’s membership, and not my own interests, I was the sole “Nay” vote in moving forward with the proposed plan for the Convention. Having a third consecutive convention in Richmond appears to be an effort to continue to disenfranchise the entire western part of the state. The proposed convention includes a $25 delegate fee, which will once again discourage our members, as well as members of chapters all over the state from participating in the convention. While others in the meeting raised concerns about other components of the proposed contract, expense, etc., it appears that the hierarchy of YRFV had clearly already decided what their action would be, and they were not interested in finding the best option for ALL chapters.

I am very disappointed in the actions of YRFV, but I want to affirm to LAYR members, as well as members of chapters all over the state, that for us to win back Virginia, we must focus on ALL regions of the state, not just the ones that convenience our personal agendas. While I was not able to affect the change I would want today, I want to assure LAYR members that I will keep fighting for you and the Republican values we stand by. We will continue to work hard in our region and in the entire state in 2021.
