📢 IMPORTANT UPDATE: Carnival Cancellation 📢

Mother Nature wins this round! 🌧️ While we all know our community desperately needed the rain, unfortunately, it hasn't left us with the most accommodating conditions to safely run the carnival.
Because of this, the Fireman’s Carnival for the remainder of the weekend has been officially cancelled.
We want to send a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support us last night, and to everyone who has left such kind words and comments online. Your support means the world to our department.
Our goal is to make this a staple annual community event and fundraiser, so we are already looking forward to returning bigger and better this time next year! 🚒✨
Thank you all again for your understanding, stay dry, and we’ll see you next year! Please help us spread the word.

Tonight, members met to conduct training focused on rural water supply operations.

In certain parts of our response area that are not serviced by municipal hydrants, firefighters must rely on drafting or shuttle operations to establish and maintain a water supply. This allows apparatus to refill and continue supplying water to emergency scenes when hydrants are not available.

While not one of our most frequently used operations, rural water supply remains a critical capability for our department. Regular training ensures our apparatus remain ready and capable of drafting while allowing our driver/operators to maintain and strengthen the skills needed to quickly and effectively establish water supply when it matters most.

Training and preparation today help us provide reliable service to our community tomorrow.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. this morning, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Energix Renewable Solar Farm located along U.S. Route 460 in the Evergreen area for a reported brush fire.

Upon arrival, crews found a Dominion Energy representative on scene who had discovered the fire while investigating the source of a power outage in the area. Firefighters worked quickly to contain the blaze by suppressing active fire and establishing a fuel break to prevent further spread.

Preliminary findings indicated the fire originated from a downed power line connected to the solar facility.

Units responding from Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department included Brush 1, Brush 2, Engine 2, and Tanker 1. The Virginia Department of Forestry also responded and assisted operations with a forestry dozer.

AVFD responded 2nd Due with Gladstone Fire and Rescue Service for a reported structure fire in the 13,000 block of Anderson Hwy.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story residential dwelling with smoke showing and active fire inside the home. Gladstone’s engine crew arrived and deployed an attack line while AVFD Engine 1 arrived shortly after and its crew attached to the fire attack group. Working together, crews quickly extinguished the fire.

Engine 2 deployed a RIT line and assisted with ventilation operations while Tanker 1 established a water supply. Crews had the fire under control within minutes while simultaneously conducting searches of the residence, which proved negative.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family at this time.

We’d like to thank all responding personnel for their teamwork and quick actions.
