‼️ FATAL CRASH ON SR-1 ‼️

On May 18, 2026, at approximately 12:48 p.m., CHP officers responded to a report of a crash on SR-1 north of Scott Creek. A 58-year-old man from Santa Rosa was driving a black 2017 Honda Pilot southbound on SR-1 north of Scott Creek at an unknown speed. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle traveled off the west roadway edge, struck a call box, continued in a southwesterly direction through vegetation, and went over the cliff.

As a result of the crash, the driver sustained major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel despite life-saving efforts. It is believed the driver was the sole occupant of the Honda at the time of the crash.

It is unknown at this time whether alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the crash. Anyone with potentially helpful information is asked to call CHP dispatch at (831) 796-2160. Information regarding the deceased victim is available through the Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.

Captain Boles, commander of the CHP Santa Cruz Area office, would like to remind the motoring public to drive at a safe speed for current conditions, never drive distracted, always wear a seatbelt, and never drive impaired. We extend our deepest condolences to the driver’s family and friends.

The mission of the CHP is to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security.
